The Art of Making Better Choices

Lazy Bones

I get to talk today about one of my favorite subjects and one of my pet peeves;

LAZINESS.

So, hang on. Here we go.

Proverbs 6:6-11 NLT
“Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.”

Proverbs 13:4 NLT
“Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.”

Proverbs 19:24 NLT
“Lazy people take food in their hand but don’t even lift it to their mouth."

Proverbs 28:20 MSG
“Committed and persistent work pays off; get-rich-quick schemes are ripoffs.”

1. Laziness is simply being unenthusiastic despite having the ability to do so. It is linked to the development of chronic health problems like heart disease, Type-II Diabetes, obesity, depression, dementia, and even cancer. Now I understand this is a worship service and a Sunday morning gathering. You might think this is something for a workshop or seminar, but not here. But let me tell you why here.

  • First, it is Biblical. I just read you seven (7) verses of dozens that deal with this.
  • Second, it is a spiritual issue. Laziness destroys your testimony. When you claim experience with Jesus yet are a poor example at work or home, it greatly diminishes your influence.
  • It affects the witness of your church. People equate your church by how it affects your life and your discipline.
  • It affects your walk with Christ, and discipleship is a disciplined life of following and serving the Lord. So you see, this is a vital subject that we don’t hear much about but should. Let me give you a couple of things laziness does.

A). Laziness wastes opportunities

  • Ephesians 5:16-17 NLT
“Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
  • The context is lifestyle and influence. God has called us toseize the moment. We are to be always alert, aware of the situation, looking for an opportunity to show Jesus to someone. When people are frustrated at us because we aren’t carrying our weight and doing our job, we forfeit the right to tell them about Christ.
  • Colossians 4:5-6 NLT
“Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”
  • Laziness is the great hindrance to opportunity. How many family members, friends, coworkers and acquaintances have never heard the redemptive story because we missed and failed to make the most of the opportunities God has given to us?

B). Laziness wastes God’s gifts

  • You have gifts: 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NLT
“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”
  • 1 Corinthians 12:27-28 NLT
“All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages."
  • This is how we impact the world. This is how we awaken a movement! When we the church become, not the secluded church, but rather the triumph church! Not the silent church nor the passive church nor the detached church, but the engaged and empowered church. We will we awaken a movement!
  • When we the people of God awaken out of our sleep and realize that all the stuff we complain about in our society…all the social ills…all the anti-Christian sentiment and non- traditional morals and values…we complain and gripe and whine and cry over it all…Listen, all this stuff happened on our watch!
  • It happened when we became lazy and left this to the politicians!
  • It happened when we quit caring for the poor and disenfranchised and turned them over to government agencies.
  • It happened when we said let the government care for the widows and orphans. Let the government take care of social injustice, and the racial inequality, and the poor being manipulated and neglected.
  • And the church became lazy and self- absorbed and self indulgent. And we started caring more about lights and sound and video and entertainment and what coffee we ordered and how convenient the access was and what songs we sang and music we played and…and…and we’ve about lost a generation of youth and culture and a nation. And we need to wake up from our slumber and sleep. And we need to put our work clothes on and roll up our sleeves and quit being intimidated by the naysayers and the do-nothing complainers and go out into the fields and take back our harvest!!

2. Hope is still alive

  • Hey, listen. Don’t give up. Don’t write us off or count us out. Don’t throw in the towel or throw the baby out with the bath water. God still has a church!! And I have a word from God: 2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT

“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”

Don’t you dare be disheartened! I still hear Jesus saying: Luke 10:2 NLT

“The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

Don’t be down. Don’t be discouraged. Listen to this word from God: Galatians 6:9-10 NLT

“So let’s not get rid of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone-especially to those in the family of faith.”

3. Making better choices

What choices should we make?

A). Stop making excuses - “The lazy man is full of excuses.” (Proverbs 22:13 LB)

  • What have you been saying you’re going to do—one of these days? What do you make excuses about? The number one excuse I hear is, “When things settle down, I’m going to…”
  • Things will never settle down.
  • You must make a choice to prioritize what is important.

B). Start today - Not next month, next week, or tomorrow.

  • Never boast about tomorrow. You don’t know what will happen between now and then.”(Proverbs 21:1 GNT)
  • None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow.
  • I want you to write down three things you know God wants you to do, one item in each these three areas: your family, your personal life, and your career. Choose one of those things and start today. Even if you can only   work on your goal fifteen minutes a day, do it - you’ll feel so much better!

C). Establish a planned schedule

  • Proverbs 13:16 says, “A wise man plans ahead. A fool doesn’t” (LB)
  • If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.
  • You need to designate some specific time slots each week for the things you need to do.
  • Whatever it is, put it on your calendar. And if it’s a big task, break it down into small pieces. Break it into bite size pieces.

D). Face your fears

  • We hate to admit we have fears because we think they’re a sign of weakness. But fear is a sign of humanity. Only fools are not afraid. You’ve heard it said, ‘Courage is not the absence of fear, it’s moving ahead in spite of our fears.” The Bible says there is nothing you cannot master with the help of Christ who gives you strength.

E). Focus on what you gain, not the pain

  • There are very few things in life that are easy.
  • You must push through the frustration and look at the gain beyond the pain.
  • Concentrate on how good you’re going to feel once you’ve finished the task.
  • Galatians 6:9 says.
“So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we reap a harvest" (NLT)
  • Don’t ask, “What do I feel like doing?” Instead ask, “What does God want me to do?”
  • Jesus never said life would be easy. There will be sacrifice and commitment.
  • But there is tremendous reward when we do the things he calls us to do.

What are you going to do with this? If you don’t do what’s in your heart then what regret will you live with?

Verse 1

This alabaster jar is all I have of worth
I break it at Your feet Lord

More precious than the oil
The sum of my desires
And the fullness of my joy

Like You spilled Your blood I spill my heart
As an off'ring to my King

Chorus 1

Here I am take me as an offering
Here I am giving ev'ry heartbeat for Your glory
Take me

Verse 2

This time that I have left is all I have of worth
I lay it at Your feet Lord

And though my days are few
You gave Your life for me
So I will live my life for You

Like You spilled Your blood I spill my heart
As an off'ring to my King

The radiance of perfect love
Now shines for all to see

To him who is our peace
His final breath upon the cross
Is now alive in me

From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected king
Is resurrecting me
In your name I come alive
To declare your victory
The resurrected king
Is resurrecting me

The tomb where soldiers watched in vain
Was borrowed for three days
His body there would not remain
Our God has robbed the grave
Our God has robbed the grave

Until My Voice Is Gone

- Travis Ryan

No other king commands our full attention
No other names above all other names
No other throne rules over every nation
No other god deserves our highest praise
No other death could buy our sweet redemption
No other blood could wash away our shame
No other cross could lead to resurrection
