The Art of Making Better Choices

Guard Your Heart

1) Autobiography in Five Chapters by: Portia Nelson

I

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost…
I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it there.
I still fall in…it’s a habit
My eyes are open; I know where I am;
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

V

I walk down another street.

2) There is no one who hasn’t made a few dumb choices. I’m not saying we’re dumb. I’m saying we have, on occasion, suffered from an acute failure of choosing well. The art of making better choices is not a science nor is it difficult. There is, however, a method.

3) I believe God gave us the book of Proverbs for that reason. Contained in these 31 chapters, one for each day of the month, is the wisdom of the ages.

Briefly, here’s the crux of Proverbs. Most of the book of Proverbs was written by Solomon himself. The wisdom God gave Solomon, at his bequest, God would use for thousands of years to teach and lead His followers.

Solomon wrote primarily to the youth of his day though his words are rich for all of us. Billy Graham said that for many years he read a chapter a day from Proverbs and he attributes that to much of his influence. John Maxwell, the leadership master, says there’s no way you can read a chapter a day and not glean many leadership insights.

We probably should just take the rest of the year and explore a chapter a week. What I have done is, as I’ve read a chapter a day, I’ve pulled a few passages out to focus on.

Let’s dive in.

Proverbs 4:23
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23 NLT

  • Start here with the heart. The heart of man is the seat of emotions. It controls our feelings of love and desire.
  • So, here’s the takeaway, everything that happens does so because it was birthed in someone’s heart. This is why we can’t legislate holiness or righteousness. We can’t pass enough laws or decrees or executive orders to stop the deception the human heart is capable of. Take away our rights to free speech, evil won’t go away. Take away our guns and does anyone truly believe violence will end? Ban drugs, we have-we do, but the use of illegal drugs has spiraled out of control.
  • I know I’m naïve- I admit it. But the heart of man can not and will not change because we try to reconcile its desires or even control it. The heart must experience a change and that change only comes from God.
  • “The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “ I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created-and with them the animals, the birds and creatures that move along the ground-for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”
  • Genesis 6:5-8 NIV
  • God provided the Ark to save man from his own evil.
  • In Exodus we find God giving man a Passover to save him from his evil.
  • Throughout the Old Testament God provides miracles and divine deliverances to save man from his wicked heart. Because the heart of man is wicked.
  • Jesus says it this way “For out of the heart come evil thoughts-murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Matthew 15:19 NIV
  • Born in rebellion to God, we are not all basically good and innocent people. Programs won’t change that. Therapy won’t cure all. There’s no self help book that will change the heart. There’s only one answer. There’s only one solution. There’s only one remedy, it is the power of redemption in Jesus Christ.
  • And that is the truth.

1. Truth, what an interesting word.

  • “Tell me the truth. Do you love me? Yes-No-Maybe so?”
  • “I believe we create our own truth”, many say.
  • “Truth is relative” is today’s mantra.

We are truth bearers and as such we bear the awesome responsibility to tell the truth in love.

  • If I have issues and go for testing and they discover I have cancer, I don’t want the doctor not to tell me because she doesn’t want to upset me. I don’t want the diagnosis and prognosis kept from me because it’s something I don’t want to hear. I know if I’m going to fight it and defeat it I have to know the truth and act on it.
  • When we deal with heart matters, I know the Holy Spirit convinces and convicts. That’s His job not mine.

“When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgement: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin…” John 16:8-10MSG

  • 2,000 years ago, Jesus said “You shall know the truth and the truth will make you free” John 8:32

Here’s truth:

  • “This is the message we heard from Jesus and now we declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.” 1 John 1:5-10 NLT
  • You see, it is a heart matter that affects our every choice. The devil makes us do nothing. My choices are either made with the influence of the flesh, the desires thereof, or the deception we allow ourselves to embrace. This is why in Luke 10 when Jesus is asked which is the greatest commandment he said,
  • “He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
  • Luke 10:27 NIV
“With all your heart…” when all the heart is trained and taught to follow God with all our emotion and feelings we are free to live life to the fullest.
  • It can’t be done with half a heart or a divided heart. This is exactly the issue that creates so much misunderstandings and disillusionment over being a Christian. It’s not about just church attendance or us agreeing philosophically how we should live, but it is developing a heart for God.
  • Let me conclude with a guy from the Bible you’ve all heard of, David.
  • His life
  • Far from perfect
  • His heart

“After Saul had ruled for forty years, God removed him from office and put King David in his place, with this commendation: “I’ve searched the land and found this David, son of Jesse. He’s a man whose heart beats to my heart, a man who will do what I tell him.” - Acts 13:22 MSG
