Whatcha Gonna Do With Whatcha Got Left? // Part 3

Pursuing A Life of Purpose

Have you ever not been able to see something in front of you?

Sometimes in order to see, we need someone to illuminate what we're supposed to be looking for. There are times you and I don't have the ability to see, not because isn't there, but because we haven't trained our eyes to see what we should be looking for.

I want you to discover what you have been put on earth for. I don't want to be a group of people that just show up on Sundays and do church together. But I want to awaken a movement that takes over the valley.

Ephesians 2:1-10
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindeness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Such a short and simple statement, yet there's so much depth. If you and I really grasp what Paul is saying, it would change everything. That is:

  • God has a purpose for you and its right in front of you but, often, we can't see it because we're so focused on what the purpose couldn't be.

Paul makes 3 big statements about you.

  • You are God's Handiwork
  • You are a masterpiece in the making.
  • God is not done with you.

1) The handiwork that God is working in you is bigger than your personality, or they way you look, or your size. God's handiwork is in the way you live your life before the world.

  • Because its your life that is the handiwork.
  • Lucy and her art - She works on it and then we display it for all to see. And the pride that comes from her heart in hearing us say well done.
  • That's what God is saying about you.

2) As you allow Jesus to work in you and as you follow His guidance, you are allowing Him to work a masterpiece in you.

  • Jesus wants to do something through you.
  • You were created in Jesus
  • You're not an accident.

Even if you grew up in a rough environment. Or, had parents that never expressed their love. Even if you've experienced abuse in your life or if you've simply never had a good feeling of self worth.

3) Jesus wants you to know that you exist because of Him. Because He loves you. And its not only that you exist because of Him, but that as you place your life in Him, He renews you.

  • There's a purpose for your life
  • You were created to do good works and this has been the plan since the dawn of time.

God has been pursuing you with a force of love that cannot be extinguished. He loves you and He has a plan that you would magnify that love to the world.

  • God saved you for something.
  • You are to be a sign-post pointing to God that He is good.

How to know what your purpose is? Its that thing you can't let go of.

  • Trust that God is near.

I think the church at Ephesus believed like many of us, that God is distant. We are down here and God is way up there. But Paul says that you are Gods Handiwork. He is near you because He's involved in your journey.

God is relational. He's pursuing you. He's here. He's not far off. It may feel like God has abandoned you, but Jesus says open your eyes and see with God's eyes and you'll see that God hasn't abandoned you, He's holding you.

Lean in.

Take His presence with you.

Don't want to leave Jesus at the door. Take Jesus with you into the community.

That's what this whole section of the letter is about. Jesus is remaking you. He's transforming you. And, it’s a process He wants to continue outside of the doors of the church.

We are asked to do good works. You can't do good works for yourself. You do good works for others.

His presence awakens a movement.

That's what this verse does. That's the message Paul is giving. That, following Jesus is not a passive way to live - its active.

  • Use me to accomplish your will. Its saying God, I see those kids in my community who haven't eaten in days, use me.
  • God I see my neighbor who's car is broken down and they can't get to work, use me.
  • God I see with your eyes that family who's experienced overwhelming odds, use me.
  • God I see the hurt that my community is experiencing, use me.

Very seldom do we ask for something that we don't have a part to play in bringing it about.

  • Can I have something to eat?
  • Can I have the keys to the car?
  • Will you marry me?

When we begin to see with the eyes of Jesus; that we were not here for ourselves, but we are here to change the world, it begins to awaken a movement in our community and the world.

Paul taught participation with God. We can pursue God's Kingdom here.

Paul is teaching us:

  • it starts with understanding that Jesus loves you
  • lean into His love
  • Jesus is pursuing you.
  • He wants to use you us accomplish His will - just like it is in heaven.

And He begins to overflow into our community through this congregation.

And I believe, His desire is to awaken a movement.

  • A movement that looks like heaven breaking into earth.
  • And movement that declares that we see God working.
  • A movement that brings the truth to our community that God is pursuing every person with a force.
  • A movement that tears down cultural and spiritual walls.
  • A movement that brings hope.
  • A movement that brings justice.
  • A movement that brings peace.
  • A movement that starts with you doing good in your world.
