Whatcha Gonna Do With Whatcha Got Left? // Part 1

What Is Your Life?

A great way to start the New Year is thinking about how to leverage however much time God allots to us.

  • Many people are content to just exist – to do the best they can, but aren’t all that interested in doing anything else.

Some are busy and the thought of doing more overwhelms them, but they do want to do what matters.

And then there are those who are just looking for something of significance. It really doesn’t matter what it is – not a position or a title or a badge – they’re just anxious to do something that is meaningful and lasting.

  • Kind of like the old saying:
  • Some people make things happen.

  • Some people know something happened.

  • Some people wonder what happened.

  • Looking ahead, determining the trajectory of our lives, is important and it is Biblical.

Look at a couple of passages from the Bible with me:

Ephesians 5:15-17 NLT
So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

  • James 4:13-17 NLT
Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. 17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

  • Our life expectancy is about 78.8 years. I say “about” because it went down over the last few months by 3 or 4 months. Some of you are thinking, “Just my luck. As I get closer, it starts coming down!”

But here’s what we all have to remember, as individuals, there is no time on life expectancy. The young as well as the elderly die.

But enough of that! Here’s the question, “Whatcha Gonna Do with Whatcha Got Left?”

Blue Print to Significance:

1. Live today.

  • Too many are living for some day way off somewhere.
  • When this happens, I’ll…
  • I’ve got to do these 5 things and then I’ll…
  • When I have the money, I will…
  • There are two entities that can really break you down – yesterday and tomorrow. One is gone and the other doesn’t exist…so live today.
  • Here’s what I see far too often.

We live as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.

  • So we take no risks.
  • We are afraid to venture out of our comfort zone.
  • We’d love to jump out of the plane but what if…
  • But what if – chances are – more likely than not…the parachute will open and you can see things you’ve never seen – experience sensations you’ve never dreamed – and accomplish something few ever get to do because of fear.
  • I use skydiving as a metaphor. Maybe it’s stepping into a ministry. Or leveraging your position to nudge people toward Jesus. Or going on a missions trip. Or taking lessons to do something that’s in your heart to do.
  • We live our lives with the “what ifs.”
  • What if I can’t
  • What if she says no
  • What if the doctor says
  • But what if you can!
  • What if she says yes
  • What if the news is good news!

Live today. Don’t miss the moment.

  • Now I know this may sound a little out of place, but I feel strongly compelled to say it.

2. Forgive fully and freely.

  • Un-forgiveness is a chain we wear while the offender goes free.
  • It is much like someone stealing from you and you serve their time in jail.
  • It is hard, isn’t it? It is hard when you’ve been hurt deeply to not want to repay the harm. It’s hard to not fight back and lash out.
  • Hear the words of Jesus again:

Luke 6:35 NIV
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

  • If we’ve ever missed the radical nature of Jesus’ message, here it is, loud and clear. Jesus calls us to love those who do not love us. To love those who have wounded us. To love those who slander our name or gossip about us.

  • Jesus said in Luke 6:27-28 NIV:
But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Jesus calls us to radical living. He calls us to a higher calling. A higher standard. A higher way of living.

I’m asking you today to do something really big in 2018. I’m asking you to let that person go or those people who have hurt you, let them go.

Turn them loose.

Release them to God.

We want to live in the moment. We want to live today. But we keep dragging this body along with us. And it keeps us from stepping into our future.

It drains us of joy.

It exhausts us emotionally.

It’s killing my relationship with God.

Let them go. Release them.

Here’s How:

First - pray about them and for them.

Second - bless them. Bless them with your words. Speak blessing over them.

1. Matthew 5:44 NLT
But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

2. Romans 12:14 NLT
Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.

Speak life over them – not in their presence unless you have the opportunity. But in your prayer time and when you think of them.

Thirdly - refuse to talk badly about them to others.

As long as you do, they still control you. When you speak badly about them, you are still dragging that dead body around with you.

Just say when their name comes up, “I’d rather talk about something else.” Or, “You know, I’ve really been praying for them and believe something good is going to happen.”

All I’m saying is you and I have an open book today filled with 358 blank pages! Let’s not let our book be filled with stuff about others and hurt and pain and anger.

Let our book be filled with adventure and joy and love stories and accomplishments.

May your book be titled, “2018: My Year of Significance.”
