Welcome Back Sunday

Welcome Back

John 21:1-14 (NLT)

Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.13 Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

KJV – v. 12

Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

1. Jesus had died – so did their hope for a preferred future.

  • Confused
  • They went back to familiar.

2. Similar today – Hurricanes wiping out islands and homeland.

  • Riots in the streets
  • Terrorism ever-present
  • Where is God in all this? Has He been laid in a tomb somewhere?

3. Our response is so predictable.

  • We turn inward.
  • We attempt to escape.
  • Go back to familiar

4. Jesus comes along – not always looking like Jesus – not always in a robe and sandals – but in a thousand other ways – and He asks, “So how’s this fishing expedition you’re on working out?”

  • Like these disciples – weary with trying
  • Always casting but catching nothing
  • Using all our bait but nothing’s biting

And then one statement from the Master makes all the difference – “Try my way. Try the right side.”

And then He wows us!

5. But that’s not all, once we go it His way, He says, “Now, come and dine. Come eat with me. Come, let’s hang out.”

6. That one moment – that one event made ALL the difference in the world in advancing the Kingdom.

  • Without that moment – if Jesus had just left them alone in their familiar retreat – we wouldn’t be here today.
  • And why anyone would think for a moment He is going to leave us alone out trying to make it on our own, is beyond me.
  • He loves you and me too much to leave us to ourselves.

Note: He went after them. And one of the most amazing revelations about God to me is – He is forever pursuing me and you!

And if you’ve wondered where He is – or maybe given up – or just been out in the familiar – I can smell a fire burning today. I’ve got a hankering for some bread and fish. Jesus has come by here today to welcome you back to fish and chips that will always satisfy your hungry soul.

When confusion's my companion

My help comes from You
You're right here pulling me through

Just As I Am (Hymn)

- Charlotte Elliott

Verse 1

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bid’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Verse 2

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot;
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Verse 3

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
