The Pocket // Turn Back

Turn Back

11 While He was on the way to Jerusalem, He was passing between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As He entered a village, ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" 14 When He saw them, He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine-where are they? 18 Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?" 19 And He said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has made you well."

I want to talk to you today about Turning Back. You know sometimes in life you get lost along the way and you’ve got to turn back. Sometimes in life you realize while you’re on a path, there’s something missing and you have to turn back.

Have you ever felt like something was missing in your life?

Jesus is making His way to Jerusalem. But on His way he passes 10 men with leprosy.

Leprosy, was one of the most feared diseases in the ancient world.

Why did they stay at a distance?

Culture told them to stay at a distance so that they didn’t pass on their disease.

But Jesus came for the outcasts. He came because people mattered. And these 10 men were important to Him, even though they had this incurable disease.

And Jesus said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they were going, they were cleansed.

To Jesus, it doesn’t matter your lot in society, you matter to Him.

It doesn’t matter how far you feel away from God, You matter to Jesus.

It doesn’t matter what people have said about you, you matter to Jesus.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve messed everything up, you matter to Jesus.

It doesn’t matter where you’re from.

The only thing that matters to Jesus is you. You matter.

And what Jesus communicated is that it didn’t matter how distant you felt you were from God, there was no relationship distance that would keep Jesus away from those who needed God the most.

And yet these 10 lepers recognized Jesus. How does a group of people; who because of their sickness can’t be around other people, who are without hope, without home, without family - how do they recognize Jesus?

And they’re desperate? They’ve reached that place where it didn’t matter what others thought about their actions. Where they didn’t care if they embarrassed themselves. They didn’t have aspirations, or dreams anymore. See, desperation will do that to you.

Have you ever been desperate?

You needed God’s help? Or you hoped God would intervene. And you wanted it so badly that you’d do anything to get his help?

Desperation has a way of taking away the things that hold us back. It has a way of tearing down our sense of self image. Because we realize that I need God to intervene in my life more than anything else.

And these lepers were desperate so they cried out, “Jesus, have mercy on us.”

And that’s all it takes for Jesus.

When He saw them He said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, turned back

Have you ever turned back?

And I thought about this leper, he is doing exactly what he thinks he’s supposed to do. He is heading the direction he thinks he needs to go when he suddenly realizes that maybe his way isn’t the best way.

He realizes that he’s healed.

He realizes that he may have his healing, but he doesn’t have Jesus.

He may have his health, but he doesn’t have the Master.

He may have his religion, but he doesn’t have a relationship.

He may be able to hug his family again, but he’s distant from Jesus.

And suddenly he realizes that it doesn’t matter how healthy he is, if he doesn’t have Jesus, something is missing.

Have you ever felt like you had your healing, but not your Healer.

Notice that his priority changed -

He realized the healing was in Jesus, not the priest.

He stopped his journey moving away from Jesus and instead went back to Him.

See the priest could only declare that he was cleansed and healed, but Jesus held the cleansing power.

He turned back. He got lost along the way, but then he turned back.

He was pursuing his path, but realized Jesus offered something more and turned back.

He was heading to set things in his life right, but first he needed to turn back and set things right with Jesus.

He turned back.

Do you feel lost? Turn back.

Do you feel like things are hopeless? Turn back to the Author of Hope.

Do you feel like your life is in chaos? Turn back to the Prince of Peace.

Turn back to Jesus.

All of us are in constant need to turn back to Jesus?

None of us are perfect and we need Jesus.

Everyday, I have to pray a prayer of turning back to Jesus because I’m far from perfect.

I get lost and distracted, but Jesus stands with His arms open wide to all of us waiting for that moment when we turn back.

But there’s a process to turning back. Look at the man’s actions

Tweaked his direction

Upended his pride – Jesus I can’t do this without You.

Recognized Jesus’ work in his life – What do I mean by that? – Gratitude

Needed trust in Jesus

But there’s a question that Jesus asks that cuts to the heart of His love for all people. He asks,

“Where are the other nine?” Where are they?

I can’t help but feel the expectation in this question. And I don’t know that Jesus is expecting the other nine to show up and thank Him. I think behind Jesus’ question is a Godly love.

To Jesus, people mattered, and it didn’t matter who they were.

It didn’t matter how far away from God they were.

It didn’t matter if they had an incurable diseased - they mattered.

And He wanted to be with them.

He so desperately wanted to have a relationship with the other nine and that’s why you hear such expectation in His question - But where are the other nine? I wanted to be with them.

I care for them.

Its similar to the question God asks Adam and Eve in the garden.

“Where are you?” Because He was used to walking with them.

He enjoyed the relationship He had with them.

He loved to be around them.

It didn’t matter who they were.

And God already knew that they had done the thing He told them not to do, and He still went looking for them.

Because God, is a searching God.

He’ll search for you to the ends of the earth, but He respects your decision.

You see Jesus turned back too. But in a different way.

Paul would tell us His purpose in Phillippians 2:5-8

His mission was to die.

That’s why He was on His way to Jerusalem.

He was walking to His death.

He was journeying towards His death.

But this purpose had power for you.

Because the whole reason He came was to die for you. Because He loves you.

You matter to him.

Most of us, if we were on the journey to our death, would be so overwhelmed, so emotional, so self-absorbed that we’d be little good to anyone.

But for Jesus, this purpose, this idea that people mattered was His life's pursuit.

That nothing could distract Him from it.

And it was the reason He was heading to His death, because people matter.

Because you matter.

He’s on His way to the cross, but He still notices those in need.

He’s on His way to be bruised for you, but He still sees those who are hurting.

He’s on His way to bleed, but He pauses for those who are broken.

He’s on His way to have a crown of thorns shoved on His head, but He makes pit stops to pick up the pieces of our broken lives.

He’s on His way to lose His life, but He still has time to be an example of love.

He’s on His way to death’s door, but He still takes time to knock on yours.

He’s on His way to die, but He still makes time for those who feel like they’re dying on the inside.

You see People Matter to Jesus. They mattered even more than what He was about to face.

And if we can learn anything from Jesus, its that Joy isn’t about what you’re facing.

Joy has a lot to do with how you choose to allow God to use you.

Joy isn’t about everything going right in your life, joy is about turning back to the source of Joy.

Jesus turned back to Jerusalem because you matter to Him.

He turned back to those 10 lepers, because He cared when the rest of society had cast them aside.

And today, He speaks to you to turn back to Him.

If only there was someone who cared.

If only there was someone who loved you no matter what you have done.

If only there was someone who looked past what the world sees.

If only there was someone who loved you no matter what.

Jesus' entire mission was to find and save you.

His entire mission was to die the death that you and I deserved.

And He stands there with arms open wide saying, I love you for you.

God is at work today in your life.

There’s someone here who has just gotten lost along the way. And today, Jesus says turn back.

There’s someone in here who has been going through the motions. You’ve been in Church, you’ve been in small group, but on the inside you feel so dry and raw. You don’t feel God’s presence like you once did. And today Jesus stands with His arms open wide and says turn back. Turn back to His love, turn back to His peace, turn back to His presence, turn back to His care, turn back to Him.

What will they say about our Church?

Will they say they were a people turned back to Jesus?

They didn’t just tell us to turn back, they showed us by their example.
