The 10 Commandments // Part 9

Commandment 9

Exodus 20:16 NIV

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor."

1. Here’s a commandment that really hits home. No one taught you to lie. Someone may have taught you how to perfect the art of lying, but lying comes natural.

2. Kids just know how to lie. To get out of trouble or get what they want or to excuse their behavior, they bend, twist, distort, and misrepresent the truth.

Some folks never grow out of it.

3. First joke I ever remember hearing: George Washington – cherry tree – outhouse.

4. One boy was asked, “What is a lie?” He said: “A lie is an abomination to the Lord, but a very present help in times of trouble!”

5. I think we all get it, lying is wrong. Lying is forbidden by God. And lying is so severe it will help keep us out of heaven.

Revelation 21:8 NLT

“But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Here’s what we need to know:

1. Lying dishonors God.

A. Proverbs 12:22 says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.”

B. A lie is simply – Any distortion or violation of the truth; it is an inaccurate reflection of the true reality.

C. There are many different types of lies, yet all lies.

There are whoppers, white lies, half-truths, fibs, gossip lies, exaggerations, misleading silences, lying on paper, lying at home, lying at work, lies that make you look better, lies that make others look bad.

D. Maybe you fall into this list of common lies:

The check’s in the mail, I’ll start my diet tomorrow, we service what we sell, give me your number and I’ll call you tomorrow, he’s not here right now, one size fits all!

This hurts me more than it hurts you. I just need 5 more minutes of your time. Open wide – it won’t hurt at all. Let’s have lunch sometime; it’s not the money but the principle.

And the grand whopper of the Christian Church: “I’ll pray for you.”

E. Story - “A man and woman are going out to eat. He looks in the mirror and sees the age of his body. ‘Honey,’ he ponders, ‘what happened to my head of beautiful brown hair? Where did my chiseled abs go? What happened to my athletic figure? Please tell me something good about myself.’ With that, his adoring wife says, ‘Well, at least you have 20/20 eyesight.’ This truly is rare honesty in its best form.”

F. God hates lying.

  • Proverbs 6:16-19 (NLT) states:
  • There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, 18 a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, 19 a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.
  • Note that 2 of the 7 are about lying.

G. Why does it bother God?

  • Because lying treats God as though He doesn’t matter.
  • Lying may get us out of a tough spot for the moment, but God always knows the truth. And lying just simply says I’d rather be disobeying and displeasing God than to deal with the truth of this particular situation.
  • It’s as if it doesn’t matter to God, but it does! As His children whom He adores, and as His representatives in whom the sharing of His salvation resides, God expects truthfulness and honesty.

H. God is a God of truth. Jesus said He was the Truth. The Bible declares that His Word is truth. And the Bible says that our God is the God who cannot lie.

And because He lives in us, we must be practitioners of all that is true and right.

2. Lying deceives others.

A. Proverbs 10:10 (NLT) says:

“People who wink at wrong cause trouble, but a bold reproof promotes peace.”

  • This Scripture deals with not being totally truthful. And by the way, not being totally truthful is totally a lie.

B. A couple of things:

1. Jesus Himself gives us the origin of lying. Speaking to the Pharisees, He says in John 8:44 (NLT):

For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  • We are never more moving under the influence of Satan than when we are lying.

2. This deceit comes in many forms.

  • PerjuryExodus 23:1 NLT
  • “You must not pass along false rumors. You must not cooperate with evil people by lying on the witness stand.”
  • SlanderPsalm 101:5 NLT
  • I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors.  I will not endure conceit and pride.
  • Once it’s done, it’s impossible to totally repair.
  • Feather pillow torn open.
  • Board with nails
  • Gossip – rumors, character assassination
  • Don’t be part of it. Don’t listen. Don’t entertain it. It is wrong.
  • Half-truths – In court, we are sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

In real life, it isn’t always so.

  • Too many live by, “Ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies.”

  • Exaggeration

1. Unfortunately, preachers have a reputation of exaggeration.

2. A pastor was brought before the elders and asked about all his exaggerations. He said, “You’re right, fellas. It’s a problem. I cried barrels of tears and tried to stop exaggerating a million times.”

3. Stretching and misrepresenting the truth reflects on our very character.

Which brings me to my final point. Give me 5 more minutes, that’s all!

3. Lying destroys character.

A. How can you tell if a liar is lying? Their lips are moving!

B. You see, lying is not a problem of the mouth, it is a problem of the heart.

  • Jesus said in Matthew 12:34 (NLT)

You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.

  • Again, Jesus said in Matthew 15:19 (NLT)

For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.

C. Abraham Lincoln said, “No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar.”

One of the biggest problems in our culture today is we have chosen to ignore God’s Word and be left to our own devices.

Our family, as I said last week, is the foundation of society. As the family goes, so goes the home, the church, the community, the nation, the world.

Every family needs 2 things: love and trust.

Without one or both, the family is susceptible to all sorts of dysfunction.

As you and I look at our little families today, we need to ask, “What values are we teaching them? What life skills are we giving them? Are we preparing them for the moment or a lifetime and eternity?”

I know what we’ve been teaching is somewhat difficult. Doing what is right – doing what is holy – doing what the Bible teaches – isn’t always the easiest route. But without a doubt, God’s way is the best way for each of us – for our family – for our church – for our community.

He Looked Beyond My Faults

Verse 1

Amazing grace shall always be my song of praise
For it was grace that bought my liberty
I do not know just why He came to love me so
He looked beyond my fault and saw my need

I shall forever lift mine eyes to Calvary
To view the cross where Jesus died for me
How marvelous the grace that caught my falling soul
He looked beyond my fault and saw my need
