The 10 Commandments // Part 8

Commandment 8

Exodus 20:15

“You shall not steal.”

1. If I were to get into man’s billfold and take all his money, what would I be?

You’d be his wife!

In any other circumstance, to take or keep from someone anything or everything, even just one thing, is stealing.

To defraud someone is stealing, to take advantage of someone or to do anything that wrongfully benefits you in any situation can be considered stealing.

2. Did you know this really was the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden?

God gave everything to them but one tree, and it was from that tree they stole fruit.

3. The Bible teaches us that stealing is sin. It is a crime in ours and most societies. But like all sin, stealing is a matter of the heart, not the fingers.

Whether you are Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, or eating grapes at the grocery store – taking what isn’t yours - it is stealing.

4. Ephesians 4:28 (NLT) says:

“If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.”

5. Story: woman went before the judge to plead for her husband.

  • He was in jail for stealing ham.
  • Judge: He must be a good husband if you want him home.
  • Woman: No, he is as sorry as they come. He won’t work a lick.
  • Judge: Well, he must be a good father.
  • Woman: No, he’s as sorry a dad as he is a husband.
  • Judge: Well, why do you want him home?
  • Woman: We’re out of ham!

6. The Scripture says that one should stop stealing, get a job, and start giving to others.

Here is the attitude of many:

1. I want what I want and I’ll have it even if I have to take it.

A. When our desire to satisfy ourselves is greater than our desire to obey and please God, we are on a dangerous path.

B. What is stealing and why is it so bad?

1. It is obviously a violation of God’s Word.

God has given us His Word to direct us and guide us to the best life possible.

2. It also is a transgression of respect for our fellow man and Jesus’ Golden Rule.

  • Billions of dollars are lost every year in this country over the theft of goods and services.
  • The LA Times reports stealing cost retailers $44 billion last year.
  • Employers lose an average $400 billion per year on time theft.
  • One new hotel reported that in the first 10 months of operation, they lost 38,000 spoons; 18,000 towels; 355 coffee pots; 1,500 finger bowls, and 100 Bibles.
  • Walmart says it loses $3 billion per year.
  • Listen church, regardless of the reason, stealing is wrong.

2. Not only is stealing a violation of God’s Word, it is a violation of loyalty.

  • When we steal, we are breaking the trust of those who have put some confidence in us.
  • It impacts our relationship with God. There’s no way to walk in harmony with God and have a heart of dishonesty.

3. Third, it is a violation of love – our love for God and fellow man.

  • Romans 13:8-10 NLT
  • Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These—and other such commandments — are summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.
  • You see, the thing that drives us to steal is when our selfishness is greater than our discipline.

    1. Achan – Joshua 7:21 NLT
“Among the plunder I saw a beautiful robe from Babylon, 200 silver coins, and a bar of gold weighing more than a pound.[f] I wanted them so much that I took them. They are hidden in the ground beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.”

    2. Ananias and Sapphira – Acts 2

Practical Application

1. In all of the Commandments, we’ve tried to make practical application to our lives.

How does this fit in our 21st Century world?

2. God says, “Thou shalt not steal.” The principle is God wants us to respect the work and rights of others and develop our own God-given talents and abilities to become self-sufficient.

  • A thief decided to siphon gas from Dennis Quiggley’s motor home in Seattle. When Dennis, inside the motor home, heard the noises outside, he investigated and discovered the thief curled up on the ground violently vomiting. Intending to suck up the contents of the gas tank, the thief had put his hose into the wrong hole – and had sucked up the contents of the sewage tank instead. The thief, a boy 14, will not be prosecuted; Dennis and the police agree that he has suffered enough.
  • And in a very practical sense, stealing, regardless of what it is, is polluting our spirit, ruining our reputation, and corrupts our character.

3. Have we become so immune to pushing the limits – rationalizing our behaviors – that we’ve diluted God’s Word to fit our lack of will and discipline and love for God?

Types of Stealing

A. Common - candy from the store. A shirt we can’t afford.

B. Sophisticated Stealing

1. Stealing time at work. Are you ready for this?

a. Social media while being paid to work.

b. Goofing off – talking to everyone around you while on the clock

c. Cheating on taxes

Jesus said to pay to the government what is the government’s and to God what belongs to God.

d. And yes, when we do not give our tithe and offerings to the work of God, it is stealing.

Now, I know this doesn’t make me popular. But as much as I love you guys, I’d rather be true to God than popular with you.

Abraham commenced the tithe, Moses commanded the tithe, Jacob continued the tithe, it was the norm for God’s children through the ages, and it was commended by Jesus.

  • Positive – fun to tithe and give
  • Benefits – what I’ve seen and what we see
  • It is a trust fund. Oh church, if you can trust God with your soul, with your family, with your life, you can surely trust Him to open the windows of heaven and pour out blessings you don’t have room enough to receive!
  • You can trust Him to take your 10% and build the Kingdom of God, feed the poor, care for the orphan and widow, provide youth groups for your students, Kids’ Church for your little angels, caring nursery for your babies, music from heaven for our worship experiences, and a preacher who’ll preach like his coattail is on fire and it’s 5 miles to the nearest water hole!
  • Just look at what we do and what we get with such a small percentage of people tithing.
  • Research shows out of 47% of Americans who attend church, only 5% of them tithe 10% or more of their income.
  • Can you imagine what impact the church of the Lord Jesus Christ could make on taking the Gospel into all the world if that percentage only changed by 5 or 10%?
  • I can’t fathom how much more we could do – the Winchester Church of God – if parents of students and kids saw enough value in our training of kids’ mission to tithe.
  • I can’t fathom how much of an impact we could have on restoring families if we had our own spirit-filled counselors on staff so we didn’t have to refer to others.
  • How many pro-active ministries could we offer if only funds were available?
  • I can’t fathom how much more we can do in our communities if we had 5-10% more of you taking to heart the Word of God and tithe.
  • Thank God for Hope Again – but I pray we aren’t just satisfied with that ministry when there are so many other hurts to heal and needs to meet.
  • And the world? Oh my, what a difference we could make in World Missions if only we all would tithe.
  • It kills me to turn the needy away because we don’t have the funds.
  • It breaks my heart to tell missionaries who are starving and sacrificing beyond our imaginations that we can’t help them now.
  • God never intended the government and welfare and give away programs to care for the sick and needy. That’s our mission and by default we’ve turned it over to, in many cases, corrupt politicians who abuse their power over those who have become dependent upon them!
  • Come on now! Let the church be the church!
  • Let’s walk in harmony with God and His Word!
  • Let him that steals, steal no more and work and give to others.
  • That’s the kind of church that will change our culture!
