The 10 Commandments // Part 7

Commandment 7

Exodus 20:14

“You shall not commit adultery.”

1. God, in His great love, gave us the 10 Commandments.

Spiritually, physically, psychologically, socially, emotionally – God knew and knows what is healthy for us and for society.

No commandment addresses that more than Number 7, “You shall not commit adultery.”

2. This is not a suggestion from the Lord. Not a good piece of advice, but this is God’s law to protect and to liberate.

To protect what? The family and life!

3. From the very beginning in the Garden, the flesh has desired what is spiritually forbidden by God.

4. Adultery is a violation of the sanctity of the family, just as murder is a violation of the sanctity of life.

5. The family is the foundation of human society, and marriage is the highest form of relationship. Adultery is a crime against God, the family, and society in general.

6. God demands fidelity in marriage and life, and sexual purity from all His children. And because the church often remains silent on this issue, the family and society has suffered greatly.

Genesis 2:18-24 NLT

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. 23 “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

A. From the beginning, this was God’s plan for man. The plan of God for a man and woman is that “a man leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”

B. 3 things here to note

1. The priority of marriage

Marriage is the highest priority of all our relationships – all others are to be left behind to make our marriages our priority.

2. Second, the permanence of marriage.

God said a man should unite, weld, or permanently “adhere to his wife.” The Hebrew word is dä–vak’. It means to stick with, join to.

Jesus said in Mark 10:9, “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

God put together marriage “until death us do part.” If divorce is an option – then it’s a probability.

Notice the order, “leave and cleave.” Adultery is when you cleave before you leave.

3. Third is the purpose of marriage. The Lord said, “…to become one flesh.”

That is more than a sexual union – it is that, but much more. We become one spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

To simplify this, God’s plan for sex, marriage, and family is one man, one wife, one life, just one time.

All sex outside of marriage is wrong and is sin.

  • Harper’s Bible Dictionary defines it as: any type of sexual activity. Included in the realm of sexual misconduct is seduction, rape, sodomy, bestiality, incest, prostitution, and homosexuality.

God, in His infinite wisdom, set this boundary for our good and the good of others.

Un-marital sex is prohibited in Scripture – no matter how much you love him or her, what your future plans are, it is sinful and a willful deviance of God’s plan for your life.

  • Included is homosexuality. Of course, homosexuality has been a huge issue in our culture in the last few years. Many TV shows now have characters that are gay or lesbian, along with characters who deem recreational sex as normal.
  • According to Princeton University National Opinion Research Council, only about one percent of the population is actively homosexual. You’d think with all the coverage of this subject, most were, or were leaning, that way. The Bible – the Word of God – consistently calls same-sex activity a violation of God’s boundaries for our sexuality.
  • All sin is wrong. Whether you’re gay or stealing or taking God’s Name in vain, violating God’s will demands repentance from us and our forgiveness is why Christ died.
  • Anyone of any lifestyle is welcome here and I only pray that whatever the choices we make, we would be loved and cared for and cared enough for to be told the truth, in love. And that our church – our campuses – would be a haven of hope for the weary and bound.
  • I’m not called to condemn – even Jesus said He hadn’t come to condemn but to forgive. Remember – all have sinned and come short of God’s glory. All need grace.

Two Things

A. Never downplay sexual sins.

Proverbs 30:20 says,

“This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.’”

We play word games, instead of calling it adultery, it’s a fling, or just fooling around – it’s an affair.

No, it’s not a fling or just a thing – it is an affront to the desire of God for your life.

B. Don’t disguise it either.

Too often we just keep it secret and hide it. But God sees and there is the biggest issue of adultery – God sees it all.

David and Bathsheba

  • How does this apply to us? Better, what are some warning signs of danger to come?
  • II Samuel 11:2-4 NLT
“Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period. Then she returned home.”
  • Signs of Danger
  • Distraction – First, you notice. It gets your attention.
  • Attraction – Next you are drawn to it, it has an appeal, and you start to give it attention.
  • Transaction – Now comes the real problem. You’re acting on your desire. You are a willing participant.

It all began with a look – what you deemed an innocent look.

I have yet to meet with a person who failed here and set out to do so.

“Not me, I would never; it could never happen to me.”

But it does. All too frequently and no one is immune.

Adultery is a marital sin – a sin against the home.

Adultery is a social sin – a sin against church and society.

Adultery is a spiritual sin – a sin against God.

David cried to God in his shame, in Psalm 51:4, “Against You have I sinned and done this evil in Your sight.”

How do I live pure before God and to my family?

1. Make a commitment to God and His standards.

The Bible is our guide.

2. Be conscious of the consequences.

Proverbs 6:26 (GNT) - A man can hire a prostitute for the price of a loaf of bread, but adultery will cost him all he has.

  • The effect on the spouse. Children. Extended family. Church.

3. Keep your mind clean and guard your thoughts.

  • Matthew 5:28 NLT:
“But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
  • David never would have committed adultery and murder, destroyed two families, and marred his Kingdom if he had done only one thing – walk away.
  • Don’t gaze.
  • Here’s the problem with pornography.

4. There are some nevers.

Nevers

  • Never pay compliments to the opposite sex that are out of line.
  • Never put yourself in a private, vulnerable situation.
  • Never chat online/social media/text or sexting with members of the opposite sex other than your spouse. Your spouse should always have passwords and access to your computer, phone, or any mobile devices.
  • Never touch inappropriately – be careful of gentle hugs or soft touches.
  • Never discuss inappropriate subjects with the opposite sex.
  • Never listen to a member of the opposite sex tell you about his/her marriage problems unless you’re a counselor.
  • Never go fishing for compliments.
  • Never stare for extended periods of time. It’s okay for singles to flirt but not married people.

Ephesians 5:3 NLT says: Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.”

5. Why is infidelity so painful?

A. Highest form of trust is violated.

B. Violation of rights you expect in your relationship.

C. But it is more. The pain is deep, caused by the images you have of your spouse having intimacy with others – spending time with someone else, enjoying dinner, or a movie, or a laugh with someone when this should have been you and your time. It is a violation of your right to enjoy this time with your spouse – a right others do not have.

D. Infidelity makes you feel you aren’t good enough or you’re not enough anymore. Your beloved found someone else who was better and more attractive than you in his/her eyes.

The betrayed often feels guilty and unworthy to be loved.

F. And if there are children they too are crushed. Adultery is self-gratification at the expense of spouse and children.

  • The Bible is so precious. God gives us His Precious Word to protect us and to free us.
  • And maybe you’ve already crossed that line. Maybe you’ve already failed in this area. God is gracious, and in His great love can forgive you, heal you, and heal your marriage.
  • You don’t have to continue on this road. There is freedom.
  • God is relentlessly pursuing you and your marriage to heal and restore.
