The 10 Commandments // Part 6

The 10 Commandments
Commandment 6

Exodus 21:13 NLT
"You must not murder.”

Literally, the Hebrew says 2 words, “No murder.”

1. Ok, here’s one we all get, right? “No murder.”

2. Unfortunately, it seems we have transitioned into a culture of death. Murder and violence are glorified in our entertainment. Innocents are murdered and slaughtered in the name of gods of violence. Over 50,000,000 babies have been aborted and we create palatable names to call it and hide in congressional legislation creative ways for us to pay for it.

Yes, pretty much a culture of death.

3. But our God is pro-life. Everything about God is life, in Him is life, He is life. He believes in life, He gave life, He gives life, and He sustains life. And the Bible says, “He gave His only begotten Son” so that we might have life, have it more abundantly, and have eternal life.

4. Dr. D. James Kennedy says in his book, “Why the Ten Commandments Matter,”

“Murder is a grievous sin to God because it is an attack upon those who are made in His image. It is an indirect attack on God Himself.” – D. James Kennedy

5. God created Adam and breathed His own breath into Adam and Adam became a living soul. God gave man value He did not give to any of the animals He created. Jesus affirms it in the Sermon on the Mount when He says we are of more value than the birds of the air.

Many today teach that we are animals – advanced animals in the scheme of things, but we are not animals. We are created in the likeness and image of God. We are temples of the Holy Spirit, Paul writes in Corinthians, we are a royal priesthood, a chosen generation, Paul says.

Therefore, because God places such value in every human being, He says, “No murder.”

6. So, what is murder?

All murder is killing, but not all killing is murder.

  • Animals (Exodus 20:24)
“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.” (NLT)

Acts 10:13 – Peter, vision, rise – kill – eat it.

Of course, we are to care for animals. Killing for killings sake is wrong.

Capital punishment is another type of killing.

Exodus 21:12 (NLT) says:
Anyone who assaults and kills another person must be put to death.

Today, we debate the value and purpose and the morality of capital punishment. But you cannot deny it was a common practice in the Old Testament and for many centuries since. God said in Genesis 9:6“for those who shed human blood, so also shall their blood be shed.”

Self-defense is killing but not murder. “If anyone catches a thief breaking in and hits him so that he dies, he is not guilty of murder.”

To protect oneself or their family is proper and expected.

Death by war is allowed by God. Sometimes war is necessary for the defense of the innocent and the protection of a nation from evil doers. Most all of us understand military efforts to protect and defend our freedoms. Many are here this morning who have served and are serving to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

7. What is murder? Let me answer it this way. The Bible is speaking of three areas when it talks of murdering someone:

  • Intentional or direct
  • Indirect
  • Inward

A. Intentional or direct – this is those who deliberately take someone’s life. The sixth commandment prohibits the intentional killing of another person.

In America, a murder occurs every 22 minutes. Our nation has the highest homicide rate in the world.

It is tragic that our kids have grown up watching terrible scenes of murder: the Columbine shooting, the Virginia Tech shooting, 9/11, and the slaughter of innocent people by terrorists, our men and women in blue gunned down, and the list goes on.

Hear me church, when you teach people they are animals, they’ll treat others as animals, and value one another as animals. This culture of death must be overcome by the church, the hope of the world, when we value and teach life.

The sixth commandment prohibits suicide.

Suicide is self-murder. Suicide is claiming lordship over one’s life. It is the number-two killer of college students. Suicide is the number three-killer of teenagers. More die from suicide than car accidents. Suicide is taking a life that doesn’t belong to you.

Suicide doesn’t end misery, it multiplies it. Suicide doesn’t right a wrong or heal a hurt or disease or end a void.

When life is difficult and we despair, our precious Savior will walk you through it if you ask. This church today is filled with people who have made horrific mistakes – blown opportunities, squandered potential – hurt others and been hurt. We are all living proof that God is merciful and gracious and is a very present help in our time of need.

I realize that some are here who have had someone near and dear to you take their life. I do not pretend to know what they were experiencing or thinking or their emotional and mental status. I’m not their judge nor yours. I do know God is merciful and in a last moment, He’s there and always extends His love.

I just want to say to the rest of us – there is always hope and help in Jesus!

The sixth commandment teaches us that euthanasia is murder. Euthanasia is commissioning someone else to take your life for you. Only God can make that call. And when we broaden the parameters of what is acceptable, where do we stop? Where do we draw the line?

Who determines who is qualified to be euthanized or not? It is a dangerous line and God in His great love and infinite wisdom says, “No murder.”

The sixth commandment prohibits feticide or murder by abortion. This is murder of the most helpless of our society.

Since the Roe v. Wade court case, 50 million babies have been aborted in America. As a matter of convenience, or really for whatever reason, a baby can be aborted. Many are even proponents of late-term abortions or even full-term abortions.

Over 3700 times a day, a precious baby loses its life and chance at life in often cruel and ungodly ways. We are people of life and believe in a God of life. We must be proponents of life. The church must be at the forefront of the fight for life.

I am aware that it happens. And please hear me, God loves you and me. Even when we make choices that are contrary to His Word, He loves – He heals – He forgives. And if you’ve made that decision, God loves you and you can be enveloped in His love and now, forgive yourself and move on.

B. Indirect murders

Psalm 82:2-5 NLT says:
“How long will you hand down unjust decisions by favoring the wicked? “Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. Rescue the poor and helpless; deliver them from the grasp of evil people. But these oppressors know nothing; they are so ignorant! They wander about in darkness, while the whole world is shaken to the core.

  • When it’s in our power to do good and we don’t, we will give an account.
  • James 4:17 NIV says:
“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
  • We must not remain silent at the child sex trade industry. Multiplied tens of thousands of children are abused and neglected, diseased and discarded – we can’t turn a blind eye.
  • Refugees wandering aimlessly and hopelessly at the hands of barbarians, must have the heart and help of today’s church!
  • We cannot pretend it doesn’t exist. We must be the beacon of hope.

C. Finally, inward murder.

  • These are what Jesus and the New Testament refers to as murders of the heart.
  • Matthew 5:21-22 NLT:
“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ 22 But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell…”
  • I love C.S. Lewis. He once said, “If you look upon ham and eggs with lust, you have already committed breakfast in your heart.”
  • John said the same thing in I John 3:15 NLT:
"Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them."
  • Jesus said in Mark 7:20-23 NLT:
And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

To be pro-life is the antithesis of murder. But church, it isn’t enough to be against something, we must stand for something.

  • Yes, we are against abortion, therefore, we have to be for helping the single parent, helping the orphan, and helping the disenfranchised.
  • Yes, we are against murder, but we must be for giving hope and help for those so troubled. We must advocate for the most vulnerable of our society.
  • We are the church. We are the people of God. We carry the hope of life in our hands and in our hearts. We have to do all within our power to change the hopelessness and end this culture of death.
