The 10 Commandments // Part 5

Remember the Sabbath

Exodus 20:8

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

I want to talk to you today about Restoring work of Rest.

Its not easy to talk about the power of rest. Because we live in a nation that glorifies the work. We glorify being productive. We live in a context that praises the person that never allows their mind to shut off. We idolize the workaholic. And we downplay sleep and rest.

I'm totally guilty. I've told Jennifer before "imagine how much we could get done in life if we didn't have to sleep."

But God never intended for you and I to function w/o rest. He created us to rest.

But God gives us the Sabbath as a gift. A gift that if opened is full of benefits.

He Blessed it -

V.11 says "therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath"

When God blesses something, usually its to benefit his people.

When God blesses us, we don't deserve it. It’s a gift out of his love.

He designed this 1 day as a gift.

He blessed it through His example.

He gave us an example in creation, He worked, he labored, but then he rested.

But the word for bless comes from the word to Bend the knee -

For us, to bless something requires bending the knee. When we bless the Sabbath we bend the knee to God. And we show the world, we show our family that work, being productive, and the endless cycle of doing doesn't rule us. But God rules us.

Because true strength is not in the doing, but in the kneeling before God.

Remember this day, this gift of rest from God.

How do you know you need rest?

You're irritable, your cranky, you have a short fuse, you spiritually weak, you feel burnt-out.

These are symptoms that you've pushed yourself beyond God's limits.

Rest is bless because it gets us back to the center of what its all about - life with God.

Holy - it's set apart from the others

v. 11 says "therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy."

He made it holy

From the word Kadesh - to set something apart.

He declared it holy.

"When God wants something to stand out from the crowd, he sets it apart. Not so that it will be all alone, but so that it will be the guide to Him."

Moses - Sees the burning bush and God says, "take off your sandals because you are on Holy Ground." The ground is set apart, because this will be the defining moment that will give birth to Moses' ministry.

He set it apart from all other days. This one day stands out as something different. This is the day that will bring life to the other 6. This is the day that will fuel you spiritually. It will be the day that continues to point you back to Him. It’s the day that will bring life to the other 6.

It's not that it's different but that it has a special purpose. its purpose is to refuel you for the rest of the week.

"God doesn't want something from us, he simply wants us." - CS Lewis

If you don't separate 1 day, they will all be the same

When God made this 1 day a week Holy he gave it a little bit of His character. Because he is holy.

He Rested - it's about setting a day apart for god and family

"For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day"

The rest comes through the blessing.

The rest comes through the setting apart.

On the seventh day God Rested-

The word in the hebrew means that he "Set Himself down to take a rest".

  • There's celebration in Rest
  • There's sleep in rest
  • There's recharging in rest
  • There's being with your family in rest
  • There's being with friends in rest
  • There's eating in rest

We need a day a week that we turn off the noise of the world, the cares of work, and rest and relax in peace and w/ our family.

We need a day that we can silence the desire to be productive, and just be in God's presence.

God didn't have to rest, he chose to rest. He set an example for you and I.

Because we tell ourselves that we don't need to rest. We say rest is for the week. Or I'll rest when I'm gone.

God created you to work, and to rest.

The writer of Genesis puts it:

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

He ended his work. He finished his work and so he rested.

He had completed all the tasks so the rest could begin.

He finished his work and now all was complete. He had brought about life. And now comes the rest.

The sabbath is not about restricting you. Its not about punishing you. Its not about keeping you from work. Its about freeing you. It’s a day set aside to bless you and for you to bless God. It’s a day where you get closer to God. It’s a day where you rest and gain your strength and clarity for the week ahead.

Sabbath is setting aside a day where you spend more time with God than a church service, time where you only focused on your family, time wehre you eliminate the distractions, and time that you delight in the blessings of God.

God wants to bless you with the gift of rest. And I'm so guilty of filling up that day of rest with chores, and things I've got to get done. But rest is best.

Maybe you've tried it your way, but how many of you would commit to trying it God's way. How many of you would say I need to take a day that I spend with God, my family, my friends free of distractions.

Maybe you're here and you can't find rest because you don't have a relationship w/ God. You feel like things just are right between you and God. And you don't feel at rest. But today you'd like to change that?

It reminds me of something Jesus would say 2000 years later. He had suffered, and he was hanging on the cross and he would whisper those same words - "It is finished."

The work was complete. The struggle had ended. His purpose is dying for you had been successful. And now you and I are free to enter into his rest.

Free from the struggle of sin and shame.

Part of our problem in resting is that we don't have a relationship with God. Maybe you feel as if things just aren't right between you and God. And so you don't feel at rest. You can't give God a day, because you feel broken, full of shame, or far away from His presence.

And to you, Jesus says, "Come to me all who labor and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest."

  • The rest come from through the blessing.
  • The rest comes through the setting apart.
  • The rest is God inviting you into His presence.

That what Jesus was referring to "come to me all you who labor in life. Who feel as if there's something missing. Come to me all you who are burdened with addictions. Come to me all you who feel so far away from the peace w/ God. And I will give you rest. I'll declare that it is finished.
