The 10 Commandments // Part 4

Commandment 3

Exodus 20:7

NIV - You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

NASB - You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

MSG - No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.

1. What’s in a name?

  • What do you think when I say:
  • Scott Orndorff
  • Ernie Barchers
  • James Brewer
  • Danny Sullivan
  • Luisa Ranson
  • Mother Theresa

  • What about:
  • Hitler
  • Peter
  • Churchill
  • Paul
  • Abraham
  • Mary
  • How about when I say it this way: Peter, Paul and Mary?

Names mean something. It is next to impossible to disassociate a name from the person and their identity and character.

And it’s true of God. It’s impossible to disassociate God’s Name from His person, His identity and His character.

2. The Text and the Name

A. The text says, “I am the Lord (Jehovah) thy God (Elohim)…”

  • What God is saying is: “I am the person, this is Who I am, and My Name tells of – reveals – my personality and what I’m like.”

B. Overview of the Names - Raymond Culpeper

  • Elohim – The creator God; 2700 times in the Bible. It means the plural God of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The creator God who spoke the world into existence.
  • Jehovah – 6800 times in the Bible. It means Covenant God, the One who has made a promise and agreement with us. He is…
  • Jehovah Jireh – My provider
  • Jehovah Nissi – You are my banner
  • Jehovah Ropheh – You are my healer
  • Jehovah Rohi – You are my shepherd
  • Jehovah Tsidkeneu – You are my righteousness
  • Jehovah M’kiddesh – You are my sanctifier
  • Jehovah Shalom – You are my peace
  • Jehovah Shammah – The Lord is here
  • Jehovah Saboth – The Lord of Hosts/Commander
  • EL means God: look at the suffix and prefix:
  • El-ElYon – Most High God
  • El-Olam – The Everlasting God
  • El-Shaddi – The God who is sufficient for the needs of His people; All-sufficient One
  • El-Roi – God who sees
  • El-Gibhor – The mighty God

C. Jehovah is Who God is, and His name tells of Who He is. He is the Everlasting God. He is the Keeper of His Covenant.

He is “the Jehovah thy God,” Elohim. Elohim speaks of His being the Mighty One our Creator.

D. And here’s the point, He tells us not to misuse or abuse His Name.

His Name is His essence. His Name is His character. His Name is the whole of His nature and His identity.

3. There’s power in His Name.

A. The Bible is replete with references to His Great Name being powerful.

  • David and Goliath – “You come to me with a sword…”
  • Solomon proclaimed in Proverbs 18:10, “The Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous man runs to it and is safe.”
  • Paul wrote in Colossians 3:17 that all we do should be done in His Name. His Name validates our work, it is honored by our industrial efforts, and empowered when He’s a part of it.
  • Colossians 3:17 NLT
  • And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
  • Remember, when we profane His Name we make the Name of God common and reduce it to the level of mere man.

There is provision in His Name.

In John 16:23-24 (NIV), Jesus said: In that day, you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

  • Listen to praise coming from His Name in Psalm 8:1 NIV:

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.

  • In the New Testament, God reveals His Name in His Son Jesus.
  • 1. The Bible says in:

    Matthew 1:23 NIV
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
  • Philippians 2:9-11 NIV
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
  • Hebrews 1:1-4 NASB
  • God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Mark 16:17-18 KJV

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

2. No wonder the hymn writer wrote: “All hail the power of Jesus’ Name…”

And again, I say when we profane His Name, we make the Name of God common and reduce it to the level of mere man.

4. Okay, so what does it mean to profane His Name and take the Name of the Lord in vain?

  • J.I. Packer says vain is, “any use or involvement of God’s Name that is empty or insincere.” The implication is using the Name meaninglessly, carelessly, and thoughtlessly, empty of content.
  • To be very practical about this, let me just speak straight to the point. The problem is most of us just don’t take His Name very seriously at all.
  • I think of the Old Testament scribes who wouldn’t even write the Name Yahweh (Lord) without stopping, taking off his clothes, bathing thoroughly, putting on clean clothes, burning the old pen and getting a new one, and then fearfully writing, “Yahweh.” Some wouldn’t even write “Yahweh,” they just wrote, “The Name.”
  • His Name represented His Character. His Name still represents His character. And when we swear by His Name or curse with His Name, or use His Name in jest, or throw His Name around as slang – we profane the Person of God and the Character of God and the Nature of God and the Sanctity and Sacredness of God. We reduce Him to our level. We denigrate the awesomeness of His Name and destroy the reverence and respect that He demands and He deserves.
  • The Bible says, “Neither is there salvation in any other for there is no other Name given among men whereby we can be saved.”
  • Even the euphemism of our vernacular is often contemptible and an offence to God. Words like, “gosh, gee, darn” when God’s name is implied.
  • Some profane His Name with their flippant use like, “dear Lord,” or “Good God,” or “Oh my God,” “Sweet Jesus,” and “Oh God.” When we casually toss His Name to fill our verbal gaps, it’s profanity.

God gave us His Name to reveal Himself to us. God wanted and still wants us to know Him so badly that he describes Himself, His very nature, and His very essence by His Name.

And He offers Himself to you and me by saying, “And everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved.”

The mere mention of His Name in reverence and faith brings His Presence to our aid. When His Dear Name is called out, He doesn’t turn a deaf ear. Oh no, He is honored when we respect His Name.
