The 10 Commandments // Part 1

The 10 Commandments // Part 1

So, we are going to talk about the 10 Commandments in this post-Christian culture. How in the world can something as ancient as the 10 Commandments have any relevance to me today?

America has wised up. The U.S. Supreme Court has outlawed the displaying of the 10 Commandments on any government building and has banned this display in public schools.

It’s funny because men who helped establish this nation, like James Madison, said, “The structure of our government and society to morally prosper is built on the Ten Commandments.”

When God was establishing His people into a viable nation, He could have said anything to them, given them any direction or guidance, written anything in stone, but the 10 Commandments is what He gave them.

He takes Israel to Mt. Sinai. And Exodus 19:20 says the Lord called Moses to the top of Sinai and God said to Him:

Exodus 20:1-17 (NLT)

Then God gave the people all these instructions: “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. “You must not have any other god but me. “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. 12 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You must not murder. 14 “You must not commit adultery. 15 “You must not steal. 16 “You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. 17 “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”

Important to Note:

1. God gave these 10 Commandments out of His great love to care for, to protect, and to show His mercy to His people.

2. What seems like negative to many isn’t negative at all but has positive effects.

  • You tell your child not to play in the street. The child may think that’s not fair. But your intent is not to be negative or mean, but you have the child’s best interest at heart.
  • And that’s how to look at the 10 Commandments over these next few weeks.

And it all begins here, God simply says:

Commandment #1

“I am the Lord your God, Who has brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.”

A. Let’s start here. God wants relationship with you and me.

1. He created us to be relational

  • Desire for companionship
  • Desire for friends
  • Desire for laughter and crying with others. It is all a part of how God made you.

2. And then there’s that part of you, that inner spirit, that God gives us that longs for that which no companion or friend can do for you.

3. It’s like a vacuum, a void, a search and longing for more. God placed that desire within and reserved it for Himself.

  • And we can have friends and we can have a spouse who loves us and we dearly love. And it’s not that they are lacking or they are not giving at their capacity – it is a part of your heart that God has reserved for Himself.

4. Oswald Chambers said it this way:

“Let me fix my heart on gain and I do not see God. If I enthrone anything other than God in my life, God retires and lets the other god do what it can.”

B. Note now how God begins this. Before any expectation from the people, God said, “I am the Lord your God.”

  • He is saying to them, “Folks, there’s just one God and I am He.”
  • Jehovah is how He presented Himself. Literally, “I am the existing one.”
  • From the very beginning of establishing a nation and developing a people unto Himself, He firmly and emphatically settles in their minds that He is the One and only.
  • And the constant struggle and the continual battle for you and for me and for all of humanity is, who gets to sit on the throne of your heart?
  • Who is the one who is growing in relationship with the most intimate part of you?
  • Who gets to climb into the throne of your heart that God built for Himself?
  • “I am the Lord,” He says. Lord means ownership. “I am the eternal existing owner of the sacred place in your heart.”
  • Then why in the world would we, and do we, let gods of our own making sit in that chair?

1. Misconceptions of God?

  • We’ve been led to believe things about Him that aren’t true.
  • How we see Him determines our response to Him.

2. Misrepresentations of God?

  • We get confused by those who claim to be walking with Him yet portray Him in questionable ways.

Well then, notice what He says.

“I am the Lord your God.”

1. He’s personal.

  • Not distant, unapproachable
  • But, I’m your God – you can count on that.

2. He is powerful.

  • “I am the Lord your God Who…”

    - He’s saying, “Let me just remind you of what I’ve already done for you. I’ve given you salvation from your enemies.”

  • That’s the God who invites you and me to enthrone Him.
  • Nothing is impossible with Him.
  • He still is “the Lord my God who…”

1. Who does what’s needed.

2. Who leaves nothing to chance.

3. Who makes no mistakes.

4. Who still delivers from our enemies.

5. Who wants and desires and delights and Who longs to walk and talk with you and me and cause us to prosper and be in health even as our souls prosper!

Not only is He personal and powerful, but

3. He is practical.

  • He revealed Himself – I am the Lord.
  • He delivered His people – I am the Lord.
  • And then He gives them instructions. “You must not have any other god but Me.”
  • God seeks relationship with His people. He invites them to the mountain. He leads them out of bondage. He reveals Himself as the Eternal – Existing Caregiver and then says, “I’m to be your only God.”
  • You see, rules without relationship leads to rebellion. And that, my brothers and sisters, is why so many misunderstand God. When we see rules and regulations and restrictions and commands, we become blind to relationship. And again, relationship is all God wants from us.
  • When you know Him, you don’t want some inferior self-made god on the throne of your heart. You discover no god can satisfy like “The Lord your God…”
  • Here’s the tragedy with so many that you and I know, it’s not that they don’t want God, it’s that they’ve found something they want more.
