Palm Sunday 2018

Luke 19:28-40 NLT
After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples. 29 As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. 30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32 So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. 33 And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?” 34 And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. 36 As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. 37 When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. 38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!” 39 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!” 40 He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”

1. The story hasn’t changed from last year at all! It remains the same.

2. The story in brief.

3. These ordinary people were oppressed in every way. Economically, if you were poor you stayed poor. There weren’t many opportunities to break out.

  • Socially, the class system was the order of the day - the have's and the have not's.
  • Spiritually, oppressed and in bondage. Rules and regulations without relationship with God, lead to broken spirits, anger, and hopeless.

4. Then comes Jesus.

  • How many of you know that when Jesus walks into your mess, messiness becomes the miraculous?
  • The folks had had it. They were frustrated and tired and weary and anxious for change, and then comes Jesus.
  • They were oppressed and suppressed and no doubt many depressed, some even possessed, then comes Jesus!
  • They were bound to religion and lived under spiritual tyranny, then comes Jesus.
  • And when Jesus walks down the hill, like scurrying ants searching for food when a bread crumb drops, these poor bound people heard about bread on the hillside and so they came.

They came because He brought:

  • Hope
  • Hunger was satisfied
  • Hungry for change
  • Hungry for authentic relationship
  • Hungry for freedom to live life with peace and joy and satisfaction

Life isn’t fulfilling? Your life can be described in a word: existence; or coping; or monotonous.

Are you ready for a change? Are you ready for a breakthrough? Are you ready for a new day?

Then:

1. Come see Jesus walking among us.

  • Lift up your weary hands, break off a few palm branches and wave... Come enter into a renewal in relationship with Christ the King!
  • Have the courage to break out of your oppression.
  • Have the courage to push through the frustration and aggravation of constantly being pushed back.
  • Have the courage to praise Him out of faith and not your feelings.
  • It’s time to turn this around and take back over your life!
  • Don’t focus on the problem, focus on the person of Jesus!
  • Giving Him your best. Sing your heart out! Praise Him with passion.
