Mind Games (Part Two)

Our greatest battle today is controlling what we think and what we say to ourselves. The enemy of our souls is bent on polluting our minds, controlling our thoughts, and robbing us of joy and peace and power with God.

The basic building blocks of the mind are our thoughts. Everything ever achieved, whether bad or good, began as a thought. This God-given ability to think is what makes us human.

Here is the goal for all of us. This is what the Bible says:

Philippians 4:6-9 NIV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

The Bible tells us over and over again that we should control what we think - what we dwell on - what we meditate on. See II Corinthians 10:3-6.

I learned these 3 basis principles that guide my life:

1. Capture your thoughts.

2. Challenge your thoughts.

3. Change your thoughts.

Remember the story of the spies from Number 13? All 12 spies saw the same land, people, cities, farms, and animals. There was absolutely no difference in what they saw. However, there was an extreme discrepancy in their perceptions of the inhabitants of the land.

Ten of the returning spies said, "We can't take the land. There are giants in the land. We are as grasshoppers in their sight, and in our own sight." BY THEIR OWN PERCEPTION, they have gone from human beings - God's chosen - to nobodies, to grasshoppers, from people to bugs! They saw themselves being squashed by the "Promise Land Bullies" and decided they wanted to no part of that, and even proceeded to convince all of Israel not to go forward.

The other two guys? Joshua and Caleb saw the same thing, but they also saw the unseen! They knew they wre God's children with a Divine Mandate!

All 12 saw the same things, but their perception was vastly different. It was the way they filtered their thoughts. Filters are our values, morals, our belief system. Then 10 spies with a negative report filtered what they saw with unbelief, and the result was a fearful response. Joshua and Caleb filtered what they saw with faith, and their response was trust. Their trust secured them a place in the Promise Land and a special section in God's Gallery of the Faithful.

Our happiness, peace, and joy is not a result of our environment...it is not our surroundings...it is not pleasant or favorable circumstances; rather, how we perceive our environment - surroundings - and circumstances. Our thoughts control our responses. What you are and what you will become begins with your thought-life, your self-talk.

1. Do not be anxious about anything.

  • It's hard not to worry, but Paul does tell us what to do instead of worry.

2. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done.

  • Take your problems to God and then you turn your negative into praise.

3. You will experience God's peace, and it will guard your heart and mind.
