Mind Games

Mind Games - what I'm preaching about for the next 2 weeks. Your mind is a terrible thing to waste! It is your mind, and my mind, that controls our responses and reactions and makes us who we are. The devil understands that. This is the very reason the battle today of our culture is for the mind. If he can control what we input and what we think, he will control our actions and our deeds - our output.

Romans 8:6-7 (NLT): So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.

What we believe is a result of our thinking. If we think wrong, we will believe wrong. If our believing is wrong, then our confession - our talk - will be wrong. In other words, what we say will be wrong and not pleasing to God because our talk is the outflow of our heart - our mind - our belief.

Romans 12:2 (NLT): Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

  • What we say – our confession – is the affirming of what we believe.
  • Secondly, it is testifying something we know.
  • Thirdly, it is the witnessing of a truth that we embrace.

If we are to impact our community and our world, we must get a grip on what we think. We have to win the mind game. When you face life head-on - deal with problems - feel like you struggle - and so on - it's not always what you think.

I Corinthians 10:13 NLT
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

2 Corinthians 4:7-18 NLT
We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. 8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. 11 Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. 12 So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you. 13 But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith the psalmist had when he said, “I believed in God, so I spoke.” 14 We know that God, who raised the Lord Jesus, will also raise us with Jesus and present us to himself together with you. 15 All of this is for your benefit. And as God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory. 16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are[d] being renewed every day. 17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NLT
Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

God is working in our lives and God is working on behalf of our future! God isn't through with you yet. It's not what you think. Don't lose hope! Don't settle!

Don't give into drifting with the tide. Row, row, rowing your boat gently down the stream. Get out of the boat! Walk on the water! Drag your boat over to the rapids and have a blast! God's got your back! You can walk on water. You aren't defeated. Fill your mind with God's Word. Embrace what God says about you. You can win the mind game.

Look at these lyrics from Natalie Grant's song, "Burn Bright."

Lately I don't recognize you
the fire in your eyes it fading into embers
So while you're out there in the darkness
I'm pray you'll remember

You were made to shine
You were made for life
Even if you've lost your way
Turn and you will hear love say
You were made for more, so much more
Child of everlasting light
Made to blaze away the night
So baby burn bright
Burn bright

You can rise up from the ashes
Make something beautiful of all the broken pieces
And I'm believing you'll come running
Into the arms of Jesus

There will always be somebody in the dark
ready to rain down on your last spark
trying to blow out your flame again
They will do it if you let them
ohhhh, so don't you let them

Oh, burn bright
Oh, burn bright
I'm believing you'll come running
Into the arms of Jesus
