Let It Rain

I Kings 18:41-45 KJV
And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, 43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not. 45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

1. One of the hardest things I’ve had to admit as a follower of Jesus is that my spiritual fervor fluctuates.

  • There are seasons of great passion. Growing. Learning. Sharing. Involved.
  • And then there are seasons of pure faith. Struggles. Dry spells. Sometimes famines.
  • Today, all of us are in one season or another. And we all understand seasons come and seasons go.

2. The Text

  • 3-year famine
  • Ahab and Jezebel lead Israel away from God and the nation was corrupted with multiple idols.
  • This drought was a result of their sin and rebellion. And because Elijah, the Prophet of God, had foretold the drought, he got the blame.
  • Showdown on Carmel

3. Three years is a long time to have no rain.

  • You can lose hope when there’s been a long, dry season.
  • We become desperate when there’s been no rain for a while.

A. Many of you have been in a drought for a while.

  • You are here because, well, it’s what we do.
  • We can sing the songs sometimes with little or no passion. We go through the motions.

B. Life’s been hard.

  • You’ve made mistakes and it’s costing you.
  • You raised your children to know God and now they’re rebelling.
  • Your prayer life is pretty weak and shabby and there’s no real desire to change it.
  • You use to be, and wanted to be, serving in some capacity, and now it’s enough to just get up and come.

Listen, I’m not fussing at you. I’m empathizing with you. Even preachers go through the desert.

But I’ve got something to tell you today. Without being over-dramatic or super spiritual, I’ve got a word from the Lord today and it is this:

I HEAR THE SOUND OF ABUNDANCE OF RAIN!

I’m here this morning to tell you, your season of drought is about over!

It’s time to get out your rain gear, put your boots on and get ready to slop around in some mud because it’s going to rain again!

4. I know it’s been a long dry season and your spirit is parched, but your day has come! The cloud of God’s hand is moving your way!

  • Our world, our nation, our community, our church, your home – it’s been a long time coming. We need some rain!

Let me prep you for it:

A. Get rid of the idols that have crept into your life and your home.

  • Oh yeah, the crucifix is still there, and the Bible is laid out and you’re still praying at meal time – all that is intact.

But it’s the little idols that are leading you astray and have kept the rain from us.

  • These idols are so many and come with such subtlety that we often don’t even know how they got there.
  • They creep in unaware. Capturing our attention and our affections. Little things they are that at first are so harmless. I could try to list a bunch for you, but let me put it simply and succinctly.

An idol is anything – any person – any object – anything – that draws your attention from Jesus.

  • When we haven’t heard from God, and we haven’t been rained on in a while, we get desperate. And when we get desperate, we look anywhere and everywhere for hope.

Wherever there’s a possibility for rain, we explore it.

  • We even try to replicate rain.

    a. Garden hose – our yards and gardens
    b. We do it, church. We change our image. We ramp up the music. We throw in a few tricks and gimmicks. But…
    c. Nothing works like rain from heaven!
    d. We go with what some other church is doing or some other preacher - we mimic their style – we make our style contemporary and dress down, thinking this will make people feel more comfortable and make the Gospel more palatable. When, let me say it again, nothing works like rain from heaven.

B. Rebuild your altar.

  • Elijah
  • The place of sacrifice
  • The place of surrender
  • It’s a “coming back place”
  • It’s where the true fire of God will fall.

C. Get ready for rain.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever experienced rain from God that just ambushed me.
  • 7 times, Elijah sent his servant to look towards the sea
  • The servant may have wearied, but the man of God knew it was going to rain.
  • He had destroyed the idols and prayed down the fire – long before it came – he heard the sound.
  • Those around him saw drought – but Elijah heard rain.
  • Those outside today may see the parched dry ground – but we hear the sound of rain
  • Those distant from Christ may be worried about the dry season, but we hear rain!
  • Those out there may be thinking…

“Maybe we just need to get us to no rain. No one cares anymore. We’re surviving without it.”

But listen, I heard the sound of abundance of rain.

Let it rain!

“The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad. Let the distant shores rejoice. Clouds and darkness surround Him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him and consumes His foes on every side. His lightning lights up the world. The earth sees and trembles, the mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness, and all peoples will see His glory!

Oh God, we want to see Your glory! You wanna see His glory?! Lift your voices, lift your hands. We wanna see Your glory, God. God, send down your power, oh God, send Your glory. We want to see You move in our generations, oh God. Come and move, God. We want to see Your power. We want to see Your glory. Oh God, we love you! Oh God, rain on us. Rain on us, oh God!”

I Never Lost My Praise

- Kurt Carr

Chorus 1

I've lost some good friends along life's way
Some loved ones departed in Heaven to stay
But thank God I didn't lose everything

I've lost faith in people who said they cared
In the time of my crisis they were never there
But in my disappointment
In my season of pain
One thing never wavered
One thing never changed

I never lost my hope
I never lost my joy
I never lost my faith
Most of all I never lost my praise

My praise still here
My praise still here
I let some blessings slip away
And I lost my focus and went astray
But thank God I didn't lose everything

I lost possessions that were so dear
And I've lost some battles by walking in fear
But in the midst of my struggles
In my season of pain
One thing never wavered
One thing never changed

Praise praise praise
Most of all I never lost my praise
My praise still here
My praise still here
