Just Do the Next Right Thing (Part Four)

Part Four

Philippians 2:13 NLT
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

"First of all, and foremost, God is working in you, giving you the desire and power to do the next right thing!"
"Pursuing righteousness is about choices."

"How does God empower us to do what pleases Him?"

1. The Infilling of the Holy Spirit

2. Embracing the principles set before us in the Bible.

A. Okay, I know some of you are going to check out on me now.
“Another sermon on reading the Bible.”
“I try to read it, but all I get is a good nap.”
“I don’t understand it.”
“I’ve read it, but not sure what is for me or for Israel or the Canaanites, the Hitites, the Gergasites, the Parasites and Termites.”
“It’s just all confusing to me.”

B. This Book is God’s Word. This Book does not just contain God’s Word; it is God’s Word.

The Bible says in:

II Timothy 3:15-17 NLT:
You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

This book was breathed into the minds and hearts of some 40 different writers who penned 66 books over a period of 1600 years.

It is a living life-giving Book. Jesus said,

John 6, “…the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

And the writer of the Book of Hebrews says:

Hebrews 4:12 NLT
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

C. But here’s the point…Here’s the “so-what” of all this.

We can read it every day.
We can read it through this year, and many of you are.
We can listen to it on our Wincog app.
We can sing it in our songs.
We can carry it around with us everywhere we go.
We can memorize it and quote it.

But if we do not internalize its truths…if we do not meditate on its meaning…and if we do not apply it to our lives, it is all in vain.

Acts 4:13“…took knowledge that they had been with Jesus.”

This is the goal. Let’s go out and live a life like we’ve been with Jesus.
This is all our community needs - a real look at what it means to be with Jesus.

Practical Application

How do I apply it?
“Teach me how to read it, understand it, and apply it” should be the desire of every Christ-follower.

Let me tell you what works.

1. Get a translation that you understand and can read easily.

I know there is sentiment here, but this is what I believe. It is better to read it and understand it than to read it and wonder what you read.

NIV, NKJV, NLT, ASV, The Message, KJV, Amplified Bible - Go online, they are all free. Just download our free app and use the Bible App. All of these translations, and more, are there and all free. Bible studies are there – free.

2. Start a plan to read daily.

Bible reading programs are there – free.
You can buy the “One Year Bible.”
Read Scripture and meditate on it daily.
This is how you “get it in you.”

3. Do a Bible study.

The opportunities are limitless. God’s Word will change your life.

God’s Word will change the way you think – how you respond – how you talk – the quality of life you have.
God’s Word will change your relationships – your marriage – your parenting – your friendships.
God’s Word will propel you into your future and God’s great plan for your life.

The Lord told Joshua before he entered the Land of Promise:

Joshua 1:6-9 KJV
Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest. 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. 9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

And the Psalmist penned those incredible words of:

Psalm 1:1-3 KJV
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Conclusion:

Every one of us here want to be happy and healthy and successful. We want to have a loving family and a good life.

And here’s the truth, most everyone here is just a few right choices away from having what you dream about.

Just do the next right thing. And then the next right and the next right thing. And you keep doing that until it becomes your way of life. A life controlled and motivated by God’s Word and righteousness and sweet fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

You can do this. And here’s the key:
How bad do you want it?
