Juicy Fruit Sermon Series // Part 4

Fruit of the Spirit // Patience

4th sermon in our “Juicy Fruit” series.

Today, we talk about patience.

Galatians 5:22 NLT
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience…”

There are a lot of people who have mastered this virtue. For the most part, I like being around them, but truthfully, sometimes these folks move too slow for me. Obviously, I’ve got work to do.

The Bible says in Proverbs 16:32 (NLT):
“Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.”

A. As we began this series, I said that circumstances and people that are contrary to the Fruit of the Spirit, helps to develop that fruit within us.

B. Here are some real challenges that help work on me and constantly remind me of my need to grow in patience.

Interruptions

We all experience these. While writing that sentence, I got a text and I got a telemarketing call, and an email.

Our best plans are often interrupted. How do you handle interruptions? That is the first test of your patience.

Inconveniences

Inconveniences is the second test. We pretty much hate to wait. I don’t like delays. You want to see me go crazy on the inside? Put me in a line at a fast food restaurant and it takes forever! I’ve got a microwave, Minute Maid, Quaker Instant, just add water mentality.

Really, a hundred years ago or so, if someone missed the stagecoach, they just waited a day or two for the next one. Today, we about have a heart attack if we miss an elevator.

Irritations

The third test is irritations – those little things that just bug you. I’m sure you have a list.

Did you know that you will spend 6 months of your life sitting at red lights waiting on them to turn green? And I’ve noticed that if you don’t take off as soon as it turns green, the guy behind you turns red!

That elevator I just mentioned. There are basically 4 kinds of people:

1. Swayers – Those who just kind of sway back and forth.

2. Rockers – Those who just kind of rock up and down.

3. Pushers – They just keep pushing the button like that’ll make it come faster.

4. Patient people – They watch us with that look – you know, that look like, “What is wrong with you? It’s only a minute.”

With all that said, God wants to develop within us this attribute, patience.

How?

1. Resist your arrogance.

Now that’s a way to start! I don’t like it any more than you do. In fact, I kept trying for another way to say it.

But truth is, my impatience is an outflow of my arrogance.

When I’m impatient all I see is myself, my needs, my desires, my goals, my wants, my wishes, my schedule, and how all these people are messing up my life.

If I’m to walk in patience, I’ve got to humble myself before God.

Proverbs 19:11 (NIV) says:
“A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.”

1. The word “wisdom” just simply is God’s perspective.

2. When I lay myself aside and see God’s perspective, this is what I realize:

a. I am only human. I am not God. I am not perfect. I am not in control of it all. In fact, I’m not in control of much at all.

b. No one else is perfect either, so I shouldn’t be so surprised or bent out of shape when people make mistakes or let me down. Cut some slack!

c. God is in control and if I’ll get out of the way, He will use these situations and irritations and inconveniences, to make me more like Him.

2. Refresh your sense of humor.

A. Laugh more. Laugh at yourself.

B. Proverbs 14:30 says, “A relaxed attitude lengthens a man’s life.”

C. We live so uptight and so high strung. We are dying from a lack of laughter.

It’s just a fact, some days you’re the top dog and somedays you’re the hydrant.

D. Proverbs 17:22 (NLT) says:
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”

E. Truth is we are impatient because we just take ourselves too seriously. Here’s a good quote: “If you can laugh at it, you can live with it.”

3.Renew your love.

A. I Corinthians 13:4 is as straightforward as it comes: “Love it patient.”

B. This means that when I’m impatient, I am being unloving, because love is patient.

C. When I’m truly putting myself aside – my arrogance and relaxing my mind and spirit, I’m more in tune with other’s needs and desires and hurts and point of view. When love rules, almost nothing provokes me to anger or frustration.

D. Ephesians 4:2 (NLT) says:
“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.”

Why should we be patient with each other? Because of our love.

E. One of the things I like least about myself is my impatience. I joke about it with you, but there are times I mourn over it.

Last summer we went to Dollywood. The whole family went. Josiah and Silas were in the car with Pauline and me.

Parking was plentiful, but blocked off in many places that just didn’t make a lot of sense to me. And you see, it’s all about me.

In my impatience, I smarted off about where to park with a girl who was in the booth. As we drove off, Josiah said, “Papa, why did you act that way with her? You are a Christian, and besides, you’re a Pastor, too.”

Well, when we got to the gate, I slid my sorry self over to the booth and apologized all over myself to that girl.

Maybe what many of you don’t know is I keep this piece of paper on my desk in my study at home. It was written in crayon by Josiah a few years back. And it says, “I want to be just like my papa.”

That’s one reason why I’ve got to get this right. That’s why I can’t blow this. I can’t afford to mess this up. It’s not about me. There’s just too much at stake. And my selfishness and lack of discipline has got to change because when I die – and I will – and ya’ll roll me down this aisle and then go eat potato salad – I still want Josiah to say, “I want to be just like my papa.”

Say Amen

- David Blake Neesmith, Jason Cox, Kenna West, and Michael Farren

Verse 1

This life is a journey we walk by faith
And there will always be the mountains in our way
But right here in this moment
May our strength be renewed
As we recall what God has done
And how we've seen Him move

Chorus 1

(And) If there's anybody here who's found Him faithful
Anybody here who knows He's able
Say amen
And if there's anybody here who's seen His power
Anybody here brought through the fire
Say amen
Anybody here found joy in the middle of sorrow
(Peace in the storm hope for tomorrow)
(And seen it time and time again)
Just say amen

Verse 2

Sometimes through the darkness it's hard to see
So just be brave and follow where He leads
'Cause greater is the One who's in us
Than he who's in the world
So child of God remember the battle is the Lord's

Misc 1 (Bridge)

Even in the valley of the shadow
When you feel alone in the unknown
Just say amen just say amen yeah
Oh even when the storms are raging
Stand and know you're not forsaken
Just say amen just say amen

Chorus 2

Is there anybody here
Tell me is there anybody here
Come on and say amen
And if there's anybody here who's seen His power
Anybody here brought through the fire
Come on and say amen
Oh anybody here found joy in the middle of sorrow
Peace in the storm hope for tomorrow
And seen it time and time again
Just say amen just say amen
