Juicy Fruit Sermon Series // Part 8

Fruit of the Spirit // Gentleness

Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness…”

Intro:

1. I’m kind of blown away by the picture God is developing before our eyes of the Christ-follower. It seems peculiar to me that “gentleness” is part of the picture. There’s love and joy and peace and patience, and there’s kindness and there’s goodness and faithfulness. Then next there’s self-control, or discipline. But here, gentleness.

Oh, the great wisdom and knowledge and foresight of God. Gentleness breaks down barriers. Gentleness makes us likeable. And if we as Christians aren’t “likeable” then we will never win our family or influence around us.

2. Acts 1:8 says that you and I will receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon us and we will be His witnesses. And how will we ever have an opportunity to witness of His amazing grace if no one will listen? We earn the right to be heard when we become like-able enough that others want to hear what we have to say.

3. And to all of us macho men here today – to which I am one – relax. I’m not teaching you that you have to be weak and wimpy. Big, big difference here.

So what is it like to be gentle? In a nutshell, here is what the Bible means by the fruit of gentleness.

Gentleness is controlling your reactions to people. It is choosing your own response to people rather than simply reacting to them.

4. And in ourselves we all struggle at times, but the good news is the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in us as we daily submit to His will. You don’t have to go it alone.

So what? I ask myself with every message. What’s the big deal? What’s the point?

What now? What’s next? How do I act on the word? How do I do what God says?

This has become so strong in my life. I don’t want to just preach a sermon and work up a response. I want to know that when you and I leave here, we’ve got something to do, to work on, and that will last.

So here’s the practical application of choosing your response to people instead of simply reacting to them.

1. Be understanding, not demanding.

A. Philippians 2:4 NLT
“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”

B. It becomes easier over time to become more demanding.

And nowadays there seems to be a strong influence of entitlement. I’ve earned it and I deserve it.

C. It is prevalent at work from those who are demanding. It’s one thing to be the boss, it’s another thing to be the tyrant.

D. The same is true at home. It absolutely costs nothing to be in control of your responses and it absolutely costs you everything in the end if you aren’t in control.

E. There’s no virtue in being hard on your spouse or on your children. There’s no virtue in demeaning the people who work for you or the server at the restaurant or the clerk at the store.

But if we allow Him, the Holy Spirit produces in us control over our reactions.

2. Be gracious, not judgmental.

A. Galatians 6:1 NLT
Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.

 B. Paul is teaching us to be gentle with those who struggle.

Romans 14:1 NLT
Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong.”

 C. Look, people mess up all the time. And those of us who have worked through some struggles and issues tend to forget how difficult it is to overcome some of our weaknesses.

Being hard and harsh is not being holy. Being judgmental and condescending is not going to propel anyone forward. But being gracious will. Being compassionate will.

D. By the way, in case you’re wondering, I don’t mean condoning sin. I don’t mean winking at sin as though it doesn’t matter. It matters to God and it ought to matter to us.

But we will never win our kids or our neighbors or our city if we judge and condemn and treat them with contempt.

Be gracious – not judgmental.

E. How do you handle someone who disagrees with you? Ah, this is one way the Holy Spirit develops gentleness in us. He brings us into contact with people who don’t see everything the way we see everything.

F. James 3:16-17 NLT
For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.

G. George Patton said we should never fight a battle when you won’t gain anything by winning.

Here’s a good example. Have you ever argued over a date? You’re out with others and your wife is telling a story and she says it was 2007 that we did this and so. And you say, “No honey, it wasn’t 2007. Remember? It was 2008.”

“No it wasn’t. I remember it was 2007.”

And the people who are sitting there do not know the difference it makes and could care less about when it was.

Never fight a battle in which you won’t win anything.

Be gracious.

3. Be respectful.

A. I Peter 3:15-16 NLT
Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way.  Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.

B. I really hate to admit this. But I truly believe through the years, the church has hindered the cause of Christ by our response and reaction to those who aren’t believers.

C. When you and I share Jesus with someone, respect them, don’t reject them.

For too long, we shared the Gospel with a sense of superiority.

You know, “You need what I have because you are so bad.”

D. Again, respect unbelievers, don’t put them down. Respecting them means accepting them. That doesn’t mean you approve of their lifestyle. There is a big difference between acceptance and approval.

I can accept you as a person of worth and value without approving of everything you do.

Let me take you to the person who demonstrated this fruit in every situation… Who, if there ever was one who could have demanded and commanded and condemned and judged, it was this man.

In John 8, we have the story of Jesus and the woman caught committing adultery.

  • The scene
  • His response
  • What He could have but didn’t do and say
  • What He did do and say
  • And how she must have felt.

It doesn’t say what she did afterwards. The Bible doesn’t follow her life and give us updates.

I don’t know if she changed. But I promise you this, she was never the same because this man who could have consented and she’d be dead, yet, He gave her the fruit of gentleness.
