Hanging In the Balance

Judges 2:6-12 NLT

After Joshua sent the people away, each of the tribes left to take possession of the land allotted to them. And the Israelites served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel. Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. They buried him in the land he had been allocated, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. 11 The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal. 12 They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them. And they angered the Lord.

1. Independence Week – we celebrate our freedom and all that America is.

2. Along with freedom comes responsibility.

  • To protect and defend that freedom
  • The price of freedom
  • To pass those liberties and freedoms on to following generations as well as the tradition of those freedoms:

    • Moral values and principles
    • A reverence and respect for God Who had His hand in giving us this nation

3. Judges 2:6-12 (NLT)

4. Today, America is at a crossroads.

  • The tensions we see in Washington are far greater than Democrats vs. Republicans, or the left vs. right, or liberals vs. conservatives.
  • It really is spiritual in nature. A war is being waged for the hearts and souls of our children and grandchildren.
  • The battle is over values and principles.
  • For over 240 years ago, this nation was founded on Biblical principles. Now, it seems many feel we have outgrown the antiquated ideas of our founding fathers and the protectors of liberty since their passing of the mantle.
  • There were guiding principles that made us great.

    • Respect for God and country
    • Freedom to worship and serve God without ridicule
    • Government by the people, of the people, and for the people
    • Freedom to pursue life, liberty, and justice
  • Today those values are debated, oft times abandoned, and those who hold them dear are being made out to be ignorant and intolerant.

5. And here at the crossroads we have the church.

  • Some say, “Be silent.” “Don’t go there.” “Be spiritual” and “Leave the politics to the politicians.”
  • But the church is and should be and has to be more than a place to learn the creed of the Christian or the place for us to learn the principles of happiness.
  • The church is a lighthouse… An establish-er and perfecter of morality and integrity.
  • Jesus didn’t just come and bless a few folks. He challenged the culture. He stared down the leaders and rebuked them for their arrogance and ill treatment of the disenfranchised.
  • He called out the religious leaders and rebuked them for propagating humanism over loving God with pure hearts.

6. And if somehow we, the church, don’t get back to that, we will lose the generations to come.

So, what now?

1. Train our children.

  • To know God
  • To trust God
  • To love God
  • To live their lives in pursuit of His plan.

2. Restore our families.

  • The family is the very heart and soul of our society. Not just ours, but every society since the beginning of time.
  • Jacob and Bethel
  • We must go back.

3. Impact our community and our world.

  • You and I must be silent no longer.
  • Share your faith.
  • Tell the grand old story.
  • His love and His truth are still relevant and so desperately needed.

There’s an old story about a traveler who hiked for many miles across the Desert Mountains. His water supply was gone, and he knew that if he didn’t find water soon, he would surely die. In the distance, he noticed an abandoned cabin and hoped to find some water there. Once he made it to the cabin, he discovered an old well. Then he noticed a tin can tied to the pump, with a note inside.

The note said:

“Dear stranger: This water pump is in working condition, but the pump needs to be primed in order for the water to come out. Under the white rock, I buried a jar of water, out of the sun. There’s enough water in the jar to prime the pump, but not if you drink any first. When you are finished, please fill the jar and put it back as you found it for the next stranger who comes this way.”

How He Loves

- John Mark McMillan

Verse 1

He is jealous for me
Loves like a hurricaneI am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden
I am unaware of
These afflictions eclipsed by glory
I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me

Misc 1 (Pre-Chorus)

Oh how He loves us so
Oh how He loves us
How He loves us so

Chorus 1

(Yeah) He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves

Verse 2

We are His portion and
He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If grace is an ocean we're all sinking
So Heaven meets earth
Like an unforeseen kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don't have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about the way that

The Lord's Prayer

- Lowell Mason

Our Father who art in heav’n
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heav’n

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts
As we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil

For Thine is the kingdom
And the power and the glory
Forever and ever
