"Go" Sermon Series Part 2

Revelation 3:20-21 (MSG)

20-21 “Look at me. I stand at the door. I knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in and sit down to supper with you. Conquerors will sit alongside me at the head table, just as I, having conquered, took the place of honor at the side of my Father. That’s my gift to the conquerors!

1. You and I hear a lot of voices nowadays.

Some of those voices are significant and important: your spouse, your children, even your favorite program.

Some of them are relentless:

Headlines scream at you.
Media, “talking heads”, keeps on talking and talking and talking.
Candidates will drive us nutty between now and November 8.
Commercials selling us everything from deodorant to weight loss programs.
And folks, doesn’t everyone know by now that Marie Osmond has lost 50 lbs on Nutrisystem? Just stop it!

2. But let me ask you a very important question: have you heard from God lately?

In a world seemingly gone mad…with so much chaos and pain and suffering swirling around us in the culture and our country…that “still, small voice” might seem like it’s getting harder and harder to hear.

Let’s talk about that still, small voice.

I Kings 19:1-13

1. Sometimes you’re just doomed if you do and doomed if you don’t.

That's how we see it but that is not how God sees it.
His Will is not always the easy way.
Elijah was just obeying God.

2. Hiding often feels good, but “ready or not here He comes.” He always knows where you are and how you are.

3. Even hiding or running, He is still taking care of you.

But here’s the point of all this:

Elijah’s running…
Elijah’s overwhelmed with fear – doubting his future…
Elijah’s in a cave. A mighty prophet of God in a cave on a mountain in the desert.

But it was there that God spoke.

First, “What are you doing here?” God asks.

1. There are times I’ve asked that of myself, let alone God asking me.

How’d I get here?
How did this happen?
I never dreamed this would be where I’d end up.

2. Maybe your choices got you there.

Maybe you’ve been listening to the wrong voices.
You know, the devil talks too!

3. Maybe you just didn’t know any better, but you sure do now!

But on that mountain was a person God loved dearly.
God loved Elijah not because he was more special – this prophet was probably more human than us – standing before kings and queens one day and hiding under a solitary broom tree the next.
The Bible says in James 5:17 that “Elijah was as human as we are…”

And that’s why God loved him. Elijah was a person. Elijah existed. He was! And that’s why He loves you and me.

Not because we are special or gifted, rich or not, or popular or cute or smart. No. No. A thousand times no! May we someday get to the place we know that God loves us just because we are!

4. And God followed Elijah all the way to the mountain and found him in a cave.

God told him go stand on the mountain. “And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty wind storm hit the mountain.”

It was so bad, rocks started falling and the mountain shook. “But the Lord was not in the wind.”

Then after the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake.

And after the wind storm, and an earthquake, all of a sudden there’s fire on the mountain.

But the Lord wasn’t in the wind nor the quake nor the fire –

God told him to go out on the mountain – wind blowing – earth quaking, and fire burning – suddenly He’s back in the cave again, according to verse 13.

And what I get out of this is:

God is not often in the show and the performance and the big deals – cause when that’s over, our emotions have been stimulated and we’ve got a story to tell, and our desire for the “wow” has been met.

But we are still in the cave! We’re still in the cavern! We haven’t made any progress!

"What are you doing here?" God asks.

1st time God asked that question was when Elijah got to the mountain and entered the cave.

Elijah answers: "I'm here because I've been trying to live for you. Quite frankly, Lord, I've really done nothing to merit having to tun for my life."

Then there was this awesome display of power.

2nd time God asked the question was after the show and He whispers this time.

After the whispers, Elijah is off the mountain, anointing Kings, and acting like the prophet he was called to be.

It's okay to sit under a tree on occasion or even visit a mountain where the shows going on. But there is nothing that will blow your, "poor ole me doldrum" off, shake your immortal soul, and set your heart on fire like one whisper from God.

But hear me please - we can't hear it until everything around us calms down and we quiet our spirits and we listen!

Oh, but when He whispers! When that still, small voice penetrates the winds of the storms and our world shaking and our dreams consumed – God isn’t finished!

God hasn’t washed His hands of you!

God hasn’t packed up His bag of tricks and gone home.

Oh no! He stands at the door and He knocks.

He stands at the door and He taps.

He stands at the door saying, “I’m never going away and if you’ll make the slightest effort to crack open that door, I will come in to your cave and change your life forevermore and you’ll never exist alone again!”

Please don’t go back home to a broom tree.

Please don’t back out hoping some great event will happen in your life and you’ll have change.

No, please today – right now – listen – He’s knocking.

Quiet your heart – your mind – your spirit – and listen.

Hear His whisper – “I’ll go home with you today.”
