Christmas Stories // Part 3

God Came to Us

1. I remember as a child the excitement and innocence of Christmas.

Anticipating the day – counting down weeks in advance.

2. As I got older, Christmas changed. It became more about decorating, gift giving, celebrations and church services.

It also became about busy…really too busy.

3. But there was always something about that day, especially Christmas morning.

Christmas morning was just different. It was quiet. It was peaceful. It was sacred.

And it still is.

Now on Christmas morning our house is empty – and that’s okay, because our hearts are full. The reason is God came to us.

Listen to this Scripture.

1. The world was in chaos.

2. Spiritual darkness and blindness could not have been worse.

3. And then a man named John writes:

John 1:14 (NIV)

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 (MSG)

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish.

1. For many the face of Christmas is Santa. He’s everywhere.

- He’s been seen since the day after Halloween.
- Christmas is a season of traditions. Of fun. Of laughter. Of family – friends and food – lots of food!

2. Christmas for many is a season of sadness, of lost hope and disappointments.

- Some of you are facing the first Christmas without someone you love, and you miss them greatly. That empty chair is a constant reminder of what use to be.

3. And then there’s this Scripture:

“The Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood.”

A. Why did God go so far?

- The main reason is because He wants us to know He gets us. He’s not out of touch with our reality.

B. God Himself became one of us so that we might get to know Him and become one of His.

4. Can we even imagine what must have been Mary’s thoughts when she wipes the blood and mucus from her baby’s face and thinks: “So this is what God looks like?”

- And the very hands that flung the stars into space grip her little finger…
- And the feet that walked the dimensions of the vast array of space and time, kick in Joseph’s calloused hands.

5. Everything changed when God came to us.

6. Story of George Harley.

- 1926 - Founded a medical mission among the people of Ganta, Liberia.
- He built a clinic and a chapel.
- At one point he treated 10,000 people a year in that clinic.
- But during the first 5 years, not one person from the tribe visited his chapel.
- Shortly after the doctor arrived, his wife gave birth to Bobby, their first child.
- The boy grew up among the village and was the apple of his mom and dad’s eye.
- One day, Bobby was out playing and his dad was watching him. While running and playing, he fell down – then again and again.
- The dad realized that his boy was suffering from a deadly tropical fever. He tried everything he could, but his four-year old didn’t make it.
- The doctor/missionary and his wife were devastated.
- He went into his shop and built a little coffin for his little boy. He placed Bobby inside and nailed it shut.
- Carrying his son to a clearing to dig his grave, an old man stopped him and asked what he was doing.
- Dr. Harley explained that his son had died and he was taking him to bury him.
- The old man offered to help him carry the coffin. So the each carried an end.
- The boy was buried and the doctor fell to the ground and began to sob uncontrollably.
- His little boy was gone. He’s in an African jungle 8,000 miles from home. His wife is grief-stricken.
- Something interesting happened while he was weeping. The old villager knelt beside him, cocked his head, and stared at him intently. For a long time, he just watched Dr. Hartley cry. Then suddenly, he jumped up and ran back to the village screaming to the top of his voice: “White man! White man! He cries like one of us!”
- That evening as they grieved in their little cottage, they heard a knock at their door. When they opened it, they found the chief and all the village standing there. They came to grieve with them.
- And the next Sunday, they all showed up at the chapel for the first time. They wanted to hear about Jesus when they saw the tears of the missionary and realized he was just like them. Everything changed.
- Everything changes for us when we see this great God of the Bible has become one of us. And He Who entered the world by way of a scandalous pregnancy, a manger of straw, wrapped in rags; don’t you think He can enter your world of pain and strife and confusion and doubt?

He can because He moved into our neighborhood and lived among us.

Altar:

I want so much to give all of you a gift this Christmas. I want to give you something that will last after the food has been eaten, the parties are over, the decorations taken down.

I want to give you Jesus. I want to give Him in such a way that you will want Him. That you will realize He is such a marvelous gift. That His forgiveness and cleansing is free and absolutely the most awesome gift you will ever receive.

And just like any gift given, I just offer Him to you today and pray you receive this gift.

A Savior Is Born Medley

- David Moffitt and Travis Cottrell

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah, a Savior is born
Hallelujah, a Savior is given
Hallelujah, fall on your knees!
This Prince of Peace will reign forever more!
Hallelujah, a Savior is born
(Repeat)

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin
Mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in Heavenly peace
Sleep in Heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Wondrous star lend they light
With the angels let us sing
Alleluia to our King
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the savior is born

A thrill of hope
The weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks
A new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O night, O night divine
(Repeat)

Hallelujah, a Savior is born
Hallelujah, a Savior is given
Hallelujah! Fall on your knees!
This Prince of Peace will reign forever more!
Hallelujah, a Savior is born
A Savior is born
A Savior is born!

Mary, Did You Know?

- Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene

Verse1

Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Would one day walk on water
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters
Did you know
That your baby boy
Has come to make you new
This Child that you delivered
Will soon deliver you

Verse2

Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Would give sight to the blind man
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Would calm a storm with His hand
Did you know
That your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod
And when you kiss your little baby
You've kissed the face of God
Oh Mary did you know

Misc1 (Interlude)

Ooh Mary did you know ooh ooh

Misc2 (Bridge)

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb

Verse3

Oh Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations
Did you know
That your baby boy
Is heaven's perfect Lamb
And the sleeping Child you're holding
Is the great I Am
Oh Mary oh
